I'm ready to change fluid in my 6 speed trans. and wonder what to use to seal the PTO cover after I drain the fluid.

Thanks, Bob

Bob. I used Permatex Ultra Black hi-temp rtv silicone gasket maker, the number on the tube is 598B. Make sure you go around each hole with the sealant (on the cover) and put some sealant on the threads of the bottom (the middle bolt, I think it is the drain bolt if you don't want to remove the cover. Silicone (sealant) dries in one hour and fully cures in 24 hours. Used it on my fass coolers. Let it set overnight and fill trans with fluid and no leaks. Hope this helps. Bought the weather tech floor mats that was in one of your post. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the info, OM.

Those floor mats are nice, aren't they? Much better than the Husky's I used in my GMC.

Get a gacket

Another option is to just buy a rubber PTO gasket. The six bolt PTO cover is standard and can be picked up from any truck hydraulic outfitter. I think I read on another thread here that you can get one from GM as their transmission uses a rubber gasket. This will save you the headache of scraping/reapplying everytime you want to have a look in the transmission.

air sander and rotoloc gasket grinding disc. . trans and plate clean in about 30sec... that works for me. i used some dowcorning #832 silicone. works good. the permetex ultra copper sealent/silicone is also good stuff.

Learn from the old man! I didn't do this and my driver's side leaked a little for a few thousand miles.

I actually used Mopar brand RTV. I normally would never use a dealer item like that, but that's what came in my fastcoolers box and I was genuinely impressed with the stuff. So impressed that I went to my local dealer and bought another tube for my 60k service (when I'll remove the fastcoolers for service).

I only wish I had air tools to clean off the old RTV. :(

I bought some gasket material from an auto supply store and made gaskets. Not a lot of effort, but I am an "awful busy" fella. Used RTV on the gaskets and bolt threads and have had no leaks. Have done this on two trucks. However, JOblenes has a good idea, will try this next time and save the trouble of making gaskets.

Is there a source for these online? I'd love to get some nice reuseable rubber gaskets... I don't really like RTV (messy).

My wrench warned me that not all the rtv's will hold up and can degrade from the fluid. sez use the mopar orange...

anyone know which part number this is?
