I went to the parts store to get grease seals for my truck. They said none were listed and that my truck probably has sealed bearings. The owner's manual says to service the front wheel bearings at 30,000 miles. How do I know if my wheel bearings are sealed or not?
I know the 4x4 front hubs have sealed bearings. Don't have or seen what the 4x2 has. At least on old vehicles that are 2wd, behind the front wheel covers, they had a cap that you took off to get at the bearings.
Second the 2wd 3500 trucks do not have sealed front bearings.
I heard that some of the later year trucks now have a two piece hub / rotor assembly rather than the one piece integral rotor / hub assembly like on my 96.
What year did this start to occur and does anyone know if the the two piece hub / rotor will fit on older trucks?
Why?
Have you ever priced out the replacement one piece hub and rotors?
Saved my old hub when I did brakes the last time and replaced the rotors and was thinking of having it modified to accept an aftermarket disc / rotor. With the way the economy is, I might have this truck awhile.
Thanks to all that replied. I will take it apart to see what it has. Might have to go to DC for the grease seals if they can be serviced. Local parts stores said CR and National did not list a seal. We shall see.....
On my 95 & 98 I have been able to repack the front wheel bearings with great difficulty. Never destroyed anything but it requires a 3 jaw puller to remover the front roter. The rest is unbolt. Highly recommend a grease needle to inject grease into the roller bearings.
The torquing back requres you to get the front rotor very tight, and than you back off the nut during reassebly. I think the manual specs about 150ftlb. Their is no service documentation for this as they say the unit is sealed.
