A Super Secret Tdr Hidden Bonus !!!???

Readers Rigs problem

I been doing searchs a lot lately and they used to work great but now the results seem to be the latest posts made on TDR and not what I searched for

My brothers looking for a CTD After looking at the classifieds and not finding what we wanted I hit up a search for "WHERE TO BUY A CTD" and I got alot of results with all of them having nothing to do with my KEYWORDS

... I then resorted to title only and still nothing returned that matched my KEYWORDS... I then just clicked search in general diesel forum only and Still nothing ???

Is the search feature down???

Ive also noted failed results with other KEYWORD searches also

thanks

DM

Perhaps no one ever posted that phrase before?

I've got a question for you, why do you have two post counts listed?

-Scott

After you hit 99,999 it starts a new counter

LOL

Ive seen many "where to buy" threads ..... some even listed special DIESEL TRUCK TRADERS and such ... I know the threads are there I just cant seem to dig em' up

DM

You did a search for each of those individual words. If you want to search for a phrase you have to enter it inside of quotes. Enter exactly this: "where to buy a ctd"

If you enter: where to buy a ctd

It will search for any post containg: where, to, buy, a, ctd. Any or all of the words.

-Scott

Good Tip ... BUT...

I just did a search for "where to buy" and I got this post and one other ... . you cant tell me that in all of the archives there is only 2 threads with those words in them ????

DM

NOTE: I DO HAVE IT SEARCHING ANYDATE

I don't have an answer for that one DM, unless there are only two posts. "Where to buy" is usually posted in a title which isn't searched unless you click the box, that may be the diffrence.

-Scott

BTW, I figured out the post count thing, very sneaky ;)

Look right on the search page right below where your typing in your search terms and you'll see Allowed modifiers are +, -, *, >, < and "

click here for more info/help - click on that and it will take you to a help page that explains all of the search modifiers and how they work. You can also look in the TDR Website/Roundtable FAQ forum at the top of this forum and there is a link in there to this information too. 95% of the questions asked in this forum are answered in there already ;) . I changed the entire search engine in late December which changed how all of those modifiers work - you have many more options now to narrow your search.

The 99,999 post count thing was entered into his location field :p .

I noticed the change in searches too, I'm not sure the modifiers help as well as they're intended to. I seemed to get better results before... Maybe I just need to get used to the new system. :)

speaking of searches, has anyone been to www.gizoogle.com? :-laf

If you use the modifiers properly you will get much better results. The modifiers now work the same as all of the major search engines - before it was very different. One of the primary benefits is that there is a MUCH lower load put on the server with this search engine in place. You also have the ability to search for a phrase now which you didn't before. You also have the ability to exclude words which you didn't before. Read the help page and it's explained pretty fully.

REVISITED

Lets just say ... ...

You want to find a P7100 Diagram ... ... .

YOu enter "P7100 Diagram" in to the search field ... ...

You Click "TITLES ONLY"

You Click 12V Forum (and Child Forums)

Sound Good right ?????

480 pages of all kinds of stuff ... . lift pump threads ECT>>>>>ECT>>>>>>

After going threw 20 pages I was getting a bit upset .....

Tried diffrent search KEY WORDS about the same thing and keep getting identical results.

Can we please get an EXACT PHRASE OPTION ON THE SEARCH FEATURE ?

Come to find out a member has been looking for a Good Diagram of the P7100 for 2 years so TDR probly dont have one (YET) You can bet when ever I get one I will post it even if I have to scan it out of a book found only in an Egyptian Cave under the Pyramids. IF I keep at it I will make a Diagram. with all the adjustment points also

(not just in this case) But the search feature seldom returns the info I know is there and if it does the correct results are barried somewhere in 500 pages of stuff.

I found This Thread with a search along with 100's of threads that had absolutly nothing at all to do with my key words

Thanks

DM

Have you read the search help that I have linked on the search page as I suggested above? I just did a search of what you were looking for and got 6 posts with the words P7100 and diagram in it. If you search for:

+p7100 +diagram

and tell it to show results as posts (versus the default threads) it will only return posts that have both the words P7100 and diagram in it. The help page has this information (you click where it says "Allowed modifiers are +, -, *, >, < and " click here for more info/help" right below your search terms to get the help page:

For example:

lift pump - will find messages containing at least one these words.

+lift +pump - will find messages with both these words.

+oil -synthetic - will find messages that include oil but not those with synthetic

tran* will find "trans", "transmission", & "transmission"

*ranny will NOT find "transmission"

"lift pump" will find "I replaced my lift pump", but will not find "I tried to lift my pump".

Another way to limit your results is to choose to show the results as posts versus threads (the default). If you show results as threads it will apply your search terms to the entire thread - ie the word lift could be in one post and the word thread in a seperate post in that thread. If you show results as posts it will apply your search terms to one specific post - in the above example that would not be returned.

Also you can do an exact phrase search by putting quotes around what you are searching for which is also explained on the help page:

"lift pump" will find "I replaced my lift pump", but will not find "I tried to lift my pump".

Doing a search on "p7100 diagram" (with the quotes actually typed into the field) returned this thread only because it is the only instance of those two terms being used together like that.

Also, restricting your searches to titles only will rarely work. The main use for that is if you had a specific thread in mind and remember the subject of it. That will usually narrow your search far too much to get what your looking for. For example a thread could be titled "p7100 info" and inside of the thread talk about a p7100 diagram - if you limited your search to titles only you wouldn't find that thread even with the proper search terms and modifiers.

That's because if you put the terms in like that it will return anything that matches any of those words. Like it says in the help screen (and I said above) put a + in front of each word and it will only return things that match all of the terms. Do a search on:

+blue +bell +ice +cream

and it will return this thread and this one https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77625&highlight=blue+bell+ice+cream . That's searching entire posts - if you search by title only it will return none because there aren't any that match.

BTW, you can't use the search results link like that any more. Once you make another search that search is erased. Searches are cached with this version of vB so that it doesn't have to requery the database every time you come back to the search screen.
