When I do a search the default for which forums to search in is "search default forums" What are these default forums? If I want to include the "other" forum I have to switch it to "search all open forums". Is there a way I can search all the forums as my default? Thanks

-Scott

There is a post in the faq forum about this as there is for most of the questions asked in here ;) . To answer the question directly on the main forum listing you'll see on the left hand side of each forum an S inside of a circle. Some are grey, some are red with a slash through them. If it's red that forum won't be included by default in any searches (view new posts, searches, etc), if it's grey it will. Just click on the one you want to change.

BTW, if you specifically want to search in the other forum you can do that right on the search page too by selecting that forum.

That's what I thought but it's not working like that for me. All of the circles are grey, I watch all the forums. I just did a search for my username (which should show all the posts I've made right???) and this very thread didn't show up. I must be doing something wrong

I'm gonna have to do more testing and reading, but MY related search issue is trying a search where 2 or more words *in a desired string* I. E. , "exhaust system drone", invariably returns all threads or posts with EITHER, "exhaust", "system", OR "drone" in them, rather than all linked together as I want - I've tried the +, and other symbols between search words - but no-better results...

SRadke - this thread did not come up for me either but posts in the other forum did. I'll look into it.

Gary - there's a thread in the FAQ forum on that as well. Also a link right on the search page. If you want to include all words in your search you need to put a + before each word - ex "+exhaust +system +drone" - no space between the + and the word. The help screen explains all of the search options in detail.

Thanks. I take it there should be no connection with the "child forums" box? I do appreciate all you do here Steve :)

Steve, I have tried EXACTLY what you suggest - last time just a few minutes ago - and HERE'S what I got:

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/search.php?searchid=326490

Not only did I *not* get the words specified in my string:

+exhaust+system+drone

I appears NONE of the listed threads even CONTAINED *any* of the search words!

HELLLLLLLLLP!

You need to put spaces between the words just not between the + and the word:

+exhaust +system +drone

If you want all three terms to be inside of a single post then you need to tell it to show results as posts. Otherwise if those three terms are in 3 different posts in a thread that thread will still be returned. Again that is all on the help page.

SRadke - the search in child forums will search in sub-forums of the one you select. For example if you select the 24v engine forum and don't have that checked it won't search in the FAQ forum that is a sub-forum of that one. If you have it checked it will.

OK Steve, just tried it EXACTLY as you suggest:

+exhaust +system +drone

And list posts instead of threads AND posts - heres a sample of what I got:

"Have you priced injectors. Real exspencive for 50horses. Lots of options on mufflers if you already have a 4 inch system. Thats were the DRONE is not in the size of the pipe. Banks has a muffler that supposly eleminates drone to a certain amount. 2000 rpm is where most cruise with 3. 73 gears and its were the drone starts. The AEROTURBINE muffler is suppose to help with drone also. Some like a DONALDSON muffler that can be gotton in differant lenghts from a BIG RIG parts supplier. I think I'd change muffler to a Donaldson and add a fueling box. If still want injectors later no problem and a 5 inch exhaust no problem. But the dyno showed time after time 5 was too much unless over 500 horses. Do some search's on 5 inch exhaust. Also on the Donaldson muffler. Its in the archives. GAUGES FIRST!"

Notice the words are NOT linked together, Other posts in the same thread as that post only had one of the search words included!

Any more suggestions?

SAY, how about YOU try a search on my word string, and then post a pointer here on the results?

I misunderstood what you were looking for. You need to place quotes around your search if you want to search for a specific sequence of terms. Type in this exactly:

"exhaust system drone"

you'll find that the only thread you get back is this one - that's the only instance of those three words in that exact sequence.

AH!

THAT seems to do the trick - and the search works on both threads AND posts!

Glad to get that figured out, because I often do string searches rather than single words. . Oo. Oo. Oo.
