I have a problem with the seat belt light. As soon as I start the truck and all the dash lights go out, the seat belt light does not stay on if I haven't fastened the belt. Also, I've noticed that the shoulder harness doesn't lock when I'm applying brakes. I've been looking at this for a couple of days but before I dig in this weekend, I wanted to see if anyone has suggestions of things to look for.

My 2001 does the same thing... Seatbelt light is pretty much ineffective. I have driven dozens of 2001. 5's at work, and found the seatbelt light works on all of them. Must be in the programming or something... The seatbelt light in my 1998. 5 didn't work either when I unfastened the belt and let it roll up... Go figure... #ad

It takes a pretty quick deceleration in order for the seat belt reel to lock.
Have you tried tugging on the shoulder harness during hard braking? I was told that was how they tested ford seatbelts as the vehicles left the assy. line.
Now that this has been brought up I think I'll go test mine. Any excuse to drive the Dodge!

Seat belts dont lock unless there is forward inertia past a pre set level in the seat belt reel. This is a mechanical system and requires no power to operate. it has nothing to do with you stepping on the brake.
As for the seat belt light, mine WILL stay on if i dont buckle my seat belt. As somebody mentioned, maybe its a programming thing.

I agree with EMDDIESEL reply.
Check owner's manual see if light goes on for set period of time or until belt is buckled.
Should be sensor in the buckle.
I will have to research in shop manual.
In 96 shop manual, seat belt reminder light lites up for 4 to 8 seconds after ignition is turned on. A timer circuit within chime/buzzer module determines how long the light stays on.
If your seat belt is not buckled a buzzer should sound. No buzzer you need to check out wiring/connections/switch in buckle.
Of course things could of changed since 96.

Thanks for all the replies. Before I noticed the light had stopped working, there is a Stop sign on a slight hill that when I turn left puts the truck on a nice incline. Every time at this stop, I found it annoying if I were leaning forward to make sure traffic wasn't coming and the belt would lock. Now no matter what, the belt won't lock. Took it to the dealer. They couldn't make it lock and are going to replace the buckle side of the belt. I don't think that's the problem but we'll see. Thanks, again. BTW, I'm a 2001 with rear drums.

Interia seatbelt lock

I have the opposite problem - my seatbelt has been stuck locked for 2 days now. Any suggestions before I head to the dealer?

Thanks in advance!

Drew
