My brother has 96 12 valve that will turn over but will not start. What kind of things do we need to check. I already checked to make sure the fuel shut off solenoid was opening and closing... it does. I am not sure what else to check but I figure it has something to do with the fuel not getting in. I told him that maybe we need to check the fuel relay or something else in the line of a fuse. Could someone please give us some suggestions on what to do?

The only relay involved is the one for the fuel solenoid. Open the bleeder screw on the output of the fuel filter to see if you have fuel there.

If not you probably have an air leak somewhere. E-mail me at -- email address removed -- for a copy of my article about the fuel supply system, how it works and how to fix it.

I was frequently having the same problem. Replaced the lift pump and the overflow valve and haven't had trouble starting since.

there is lot's of things to check, first make sure that the fuel shut down solenoid is working properly, by that i mean, have somebody crank the truck, watch the solenoid arm, when you begin to crank, the arm should pull up on the fuel pump, that will allow the fuel pump to "run", and the engine will start. i just had a problem with my truck, and it would crank and not start, there was alot fo things wrong with it, but the first thing you need to do is make sure that the solenoid is working, if not, it dont matter how many lines you crack, there is no fuel going to them! good luck with your problem.

Listen to this guy. One simple cracking of an injector line will tell you if you have fuel problems or NOT. If no fuel there, then go about finding out where the fuel problem is.

crack open and injector line and turn over make sure your getting fuel.

You said the fuel shut off solenoid is working so why not do the easy test of opening the bleed screw on the fuel filter housing as suggested? No fuel or fuel, then you know which way to go and have eliminated some items.

I am having similiar problems on my 97. I have replaced the relay, cleaned all the terminals at the batteries and the leads for the relay (blue fusible link) and the solenoid is working properly. So at this point I am leaning towards a fuel system problem, particularly losing prime through deteriorated rubber lines, a burned fuel heater, etc. These ideas were provided to me by J. George in a write up he did (thanks). But the symptoms are opposite what i would expect if the pump was losing prime. The truck starts ok after sitting all night or after long periods of time (3 to 4 hours). The problem is once the truck reaches operating temp, it is difficult to restart. The only way to get it restarted is to pull the solenoid (which is working correctly, I have had different people check hot and cold) up by hand, then crank to start. After a few seconds of cranking the truck starts and runs fine. I am more than willing to replace whatever lines, rip off the fuel heater and ditch it, but am wanting to first understand the problem, why am i not getting fuel and or losing prime???? I do have a prime-loc relocation kit to go on the truck, but want to get the thing running 100% before i throw a variable into the mix.

I am not trying to hi-jack this thread, just thought others could benefit from further discussion.

Thanks

Thanks Joe, my brother and I did what you said as far as pushing the throttle slightly and cranking for thirty seconds---second time around she started up. Thanks again.
