Brake Smart

We are planning a trip to Vancouver Island next summer and would like to chat with residents from there ( or BC in general ) about pulling a TT in your province. I know the ferry will cost about $200 each way  Looking for info regarding government rules and regulations since they are much stricter than AB ( ours are too slack ). Shadrach

I live on Vancouver Island and can get you any campsite information you want or need.

I am 50' long (1997 Dodge CC, Long Box, Hitch and 27E Arctic Fox (28' 11")). I just came got back to the island and my cost was about $280 (3 adults) - I can look up the exact amount if you like.

How long will you be here? Tofino / Long Beach is always nice - reservations highly recommended. Whale watching? Fishing? Surfing?

My door sticker says GVWR 9900 lbs and the 2003 Dodge sales brochure I have says max CGVWR is 23000 lbs. This past summer I weighed the truck and trailer together on our way camping and came up with 17. 500. So I know I'm OK but how do the "officials" read it? They don't have a sales brochure with them . Shadrach

Sorry I should have said about $300 each way. We plan on staying most of the time at Englishman River Falls, not sure on details yet. We have been out there many times. Back in 92 I rented a TT and went out there. All the other times I've flown. Now that I have a truck ( make that engine ) worthy of pulling the mountains I will do it again. Before I didn't like pulling with the old V8 Dodge, at least not in hills. Shadrach

Assuming you get checked (not likely -- you'll only get checked if your truck is a beater or the rear is sagging under the weight) the commercial vehicles inspectors care about:
GVW of your truck
GAWR for each axle on your truck
Tire rating and load for each tire
Same for your trailer.

Generally you must be licenced for your total weight (truck, trailer & payload) BUT BUT BUT certain trailers -- like RV and boat -- have their own licenced weight so you're good to go.

The place people get into trouble is campers. Most 1/2T gas or 3/4T Diesel pickups will be overloaded with a camper (because people overlook fuel, water, people, gear).

What do trailer plates cost in BC? In AB you only buy them once and as long as you don't need to transfer them to another trailer ( a $25? fee IIRC ) there is no future cost. :) For new ones I thinks it's about $120. Insurance is separate. Shadrach

Trailers are licensed and insured each year. My little utility trailer was $75 I think. The Insurance Corporation of BC is a Crown corporation that handles vehicle insurance & licensing. Driver's licenses too. Basic insurance is mandatory through ICBC.

Ross, we are also thinking on going into Vancouver Island on our way to Alaska next summer or on our way back. What would it cost to take just the truck across and leave the 5th wheel in Vancouver. Can you recommend an RV Park to leave the 5er with electric hook-up near Horseshoe Bay terminal?

If you have some cash to burn you can take the ferry from Tsawwassen to Vancouver Island and then from Port Hardy (Northern VI) to Prince Rupert. It's the Inside Passage run. It's like taking a cruise ship up the coast (it's 15 hours).

We just got back from 10 days on the Island. We flew into Sidney to visit a friend and then drove the rental North. We rented a cabin in Parksville as we wanted to see what the weather was like there this time of year. We were checking out the area for future reference as I am getting tired of the dry cold winters here. I found it interesting while checking out the weather channel in Parksville one day it said the record low for that day was -14*C ( 7*F ) Yesterday here the record low was -40* ( same both C & F ) The temps while we were there averaged 4-7* C ( 40-45 *F ) with a high on Christmas day of 9 ( 49 ) I'll take that any day over what I am used to, although we are having a mild winter so far.

The biggest problem I find about British Columbia is that BC appears to stand for Bring Cash. Now if it ever became part of Alberta that would be great :-laf

On our way back we drove out to Langley to get a part from Harry at Peak Diesel. We dropped the rental off and came back by VIA rail. Shad
