Hey I've got a 04. 5 Dodge ram and dont really follow the other dodge body styles too much. But I'm now looking for another Dodge 2nd Generation with cummins, manual trans, 4wd, most likely DRW for my girlfriend. What years had been known for what certain problems??? which year model would you suggest??? this truck will get similar goodies my 3rd gen has to improve efficiencies for better economy/power. later in its life may turn into a pulling truck.

PS:: when did the NV4500 go away and the NV5600 come around???

The NV5600 started as an option in the 98. 5 trucks and continued as an uption up to 03 when the 3rd gens came out and ran up to 05, the NV4500 ended in 02.

are you wanting a 12 valve or 24 valve?98. 5-2002 have major issues with the fuel system. early years of the 24 valve with the 53 block had issues with cracking and couldnt truely be fixed without block replacement. if your buyin one of these trucks spend 700 when you buy the truck and put a fass on and have 1500 dollars laying around for a vp44 injection pump replacement.

01. 5 is when the nv5600 with the big input shafts came out. they had issues with the earlier ones. also year for rear disc brakes. 12v will make more power and in my opinion, is more reliable. like mentioned about, the 24v's have there issues. KDP is an issue up to 01 i think. 5th gear nut on all nv4500's. availability of both NV transmission's in going down.

if your gonna pull it. get a 96-98 12v. youll get the big p-pump. only have the 5 speed option but from what ive seen in the last few years, i would take is over the 6speed. what do you want to spend?

unless you absolutely HAVE to have a quad cab, I'd get a 97... you get the 215 pump, 12v reliability, hydroboost brakes (makes maint/service much easier, never mind stops better), and you get the better AC controls and lower price compared to the coveted 98's
