I have an oil Leak. . It is dripping off the bottom between the bell housing and the oil pan... and is Oil. . I see it dripping down from the right rear corner of the engine block, pass side... Seems to be dripping down there and behind the oil pan and off... I checked behind the valve cover and it is a little dirty but not wet. . Head Gasket??. . It is wet below the outlet of the #6 port of the Exhaust Manifold. .

Is there a commonality for a leak at the head in this area? (pass side rear). . I had the engine rebuilt around 40K ago and I do tow heavy a few times a year... I try not to get the engine too hot and I do have a engine oil cooler. (my own design). Have not had the head re-torqued since the rebuild. . is that what it might need?

If it is the Head Gasket, How much would a shop charge to do this? I have never done this or messed with the injectors.

TIA,

Eric

Mine has leaked there for many 100,000's miles. I replaced the oil pan (somebody broke the drain plug boss before I got it) and have had the clutch replaced and inspected the rear seal, all to no avail.

It's sweating hp!

Godspeed,

Its not leaking at the oil pan. . thats where it ends up. . or at least on the bell housing bottom...
I talked to a foreman mechanic and he suggested I re-torque the head bolts and see if that works. . I told him it was 40K ago and he said that it is fine. . So that is what I will do this weekend.

Anybody know the correct torque for these head bolts?. . Don't think they are studs. . just regular. I have the Manual for the torque pattern.

If your leak is coming from the head gasket, I don't think a retorque will solve anything. For what it is worth, I go to 125 on my 12 valve engine. Take a good look at the rear of the valve cove gasket area also.

I did reach behind the Valve Cover and it came up dusty dirty. . not wet with oil. .

It is wet BELOW the #6 Exhaust port right at the joint for the head. . The Mechanic said there is a possibility that just a little torque extra as the gasket settle and bolts stretch. . we will see. . hope so as it will be a free fix. .

Well I did a retorque. It seemed to fix a smaller problem of a small seep of oil coming from the #6 port of the head. So that is good now but what was really happening with my big leak is the 5600 transmission.

I have rebuilt it about 40K ago and it was not even very good when it was done. . hard to get into gear and such. . I recently replaced my Trans. Case and now it leaks out the rear seal.

Was Wondering if there is anything out there. . Different... that will bolt up to the cummins like a Eaton 8 speed Manual or something. . And if it does, would the Transfer case bolt up to it?
