At the U. S. Diesel Truckin Nationals, the Auto Wurks Diesel racer had something happen to her that I'd only seen Detroit Two Stroke Road Oilers do. It ran backwards. As we were doing a governor adjustment, we had the shutoff solenoid off it to access the springs and we were holding the run lever manually in the run position. As we pushed it to the off position, the engine sputtered and took off backwards for a second. Exhaust smoke belched out the mouth of the turbo. Anybody else ever see a four stroke engine do that? Very strange. Stranger that the engine has propelled the truck to its fastest speeds and et's since then.

Chris... . when I was watching a crane lift a house on to a foundation, it started doing the same thing. I asked the operater what happped. . they concluded that the engine starting to run backwards

I've seen 2-3 cylinder 2-stroke diesels used in boats that actually stop then run backwards for reverse,no transmission problems to worry about.

Yeah, but I freaked out. I'm in the driver's seat, the key's off, the rpms are at zero, then at 1500. And I'm like... . guys the key is off! Thankfully no oil pump problems occurred. We concluded that the "run" lever did not go all the way to the off position, and the engine almost shut off and bounced upon compression, sending it backwards burning the small amount of fuel that was getting through the cylinders. Considering the timing the engine has, it is very easy to come to this conclusion.

I used to drive a Kenworth with a 425hp caterpillar. It "ran backwards" twice on me when I stopped and let the clutch out, in neutral, with the jake brake on. It was a '90 model. (non-computer). It is strange seeing smoke coming out of the air cleaners.
