Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Sell the 01' for a 48RE / 4X4??

Nuts, I'm getting the bug again to sell the 01' HO sixer for the 04' 1/2 HO with an auto. The question is, will there be a big difference with a 3. 73 rear end, as opposed to the 4. 10 I have now? I still tow fairly heavy, 11K to 12K, and don't want to dog it on some of the big grades around here. I have heard good things about the 48RE in the 3rd gen forum, but I have heard better MPG quoted with the 3. 73 diff. It that right?? I get a little fuzzy where gears are concerned, so any advice is appreciated. Help while I still have a little reasoning ability left..... Sarge
