Anybody running a Big exhaust 4"?

scotty hole

It has been cold enough the last couple weeks that the 15w-40 rottella is a little to stiff for me. A friend uses 15w-40 semi-synthetic amsoil, 12 TBN is the part number I think. I was wondering if that would be a good oil for my motor for year round use. He uses it in all his equipment and ford powerstrokes and likes it. I can get it from him since he buys it by the barrel. If anyone can give me any good advice that would be nice, also what is the price roughly for this oil, and some of the other grades available from amsoil. Thanks, Tony

I dont believe Amsoil makes a "semi synthetic". I use the 15-40 Amsoil and like it. With the cold weather here it works fine and it gets all the way down to 20deg 2 or 3 times a year too. Its a good oil and I have been doing the extended drain thing with anylisis every 6000 and after 30,000 it still comes back with a "continue to use" tag and good readings on all the stuff they check out. It would be an outstanding choice for cold weather and some of the other guys that live where its really cold prolly have some input on the best grade for cold use.

If I remember correctly the Amsoil full synthetic is pretty close in price to the semi-syn. Based on that, the full syn is the better way to go of the two products.

An even better alternative, IMHO would be a 5w40 oil. One example of which is Delvac 1 5w40, but there are other alternatives. The 5w will really flow much better on those cold mornings.

TBrown,

The number (TBN-12) you gave os the Total Base Number of the oil. Has to do with acid removal, the higher the TBN number, the better.

Amsoil does make a semi-synthetic (PCO-**) is the stock number, and it is a litle less money than the full synthetics, but does not have the cold weather flowability that the full synthetic does.

Pour point of the Amsoil Diesel 5w-30 is -50

Amsoil Diesel full synthetic 15w-40 -44

Amsoil semi-synthetic 15-40 is -36

If it is cheap and handy, the semi is fine.

Cooker? Whats the pour point of the one you are talking about?

I don't go out of the house past -20, so it is all moot to me!!

;)

I am considering this oil because it is handy. I am not sure on what it will cost me yet, It should be whatever it cost him for a drum divided out to dollars per gallon. I don't have any idea on what full synthetic would cost and don't plan on extending my drain interval very far, maybe out to 10k at the most, maybe stay at around 6k. I figure it is better to have clean oil than to try to save a buck.
