Anyone have one of the sending units that you have taken out. I thought about taking one of the units and making the fix to it before I drop the tank and check mine. I don't have time drop the tank and then take time to make the mods to my sending unit. I think the direction for the fix is on Fritz's website.

Rick

i second that, i am on a tight schedule every week and dont have the time between a girlfriend, hunting and college to drop the tank and possibly get into more than i thought. if anyone has a second spare i would appreciate one also.

I would suggest starting with a new sender, I just did mine and was thinking of doing it like you were but when I got it out I didn't want to put the old one back in repaired or not.

I bought a new one, updated it, then put it in, the old one was screwed.

Hope this helps, Michael

I asked for a used sender here about a year and a half ago. Rich M sent me his. I bombed it, it lasted two months. You are much better off to buy a new one and modify it, don't waste your time like I did, they don't cost that much.

What Mod??????????

Whats the Mod you guys are refering to ????? My sender is dead in the water and need to replace as well, are these senders only available from D/C or can you buy them from NAPA or aftermarket ect and for how much?????????? Thanks Turbine Dude

TurbineDude

Turbine,

The mods they are referring to is to replace parts in the fuel sender unit with a new spring ,stainless steel bolt and keeper nut that is in the tank. This replaces the original aluminum bolt, that the sender float rod pivots on, wears and then you get sloppy contact with the variable resistor strip and the float arm contact. When I took mine out, it looked like trash, so in went a new one! I wished I would of rebuilt the new one to extend it a little longer. I would like to build a "bullet proof" one. I could make a mint selling and installing them and retire from the phone company today! I don't know if NAPA or others sell them but they may be the same unit that is installed in other Chrysler products that "might" be cheaper to buy. My "Mother-in-laws" sender is out in her 1993 Dodge mini-van. When I fix it, I'll find out. I'm on sender No. 3. at 60k miles. Good luck, Herb:rolleyes:

Sender

I bombed my used sender and it's been working great ever since. By the way, the best way to get to this thing is to raise the bed rather then dropping the tank IMHO. I think it took me only about 2 hours having never been in there before to update my sender and to fix the whole fuel tank modual, which was bent from the fuel tank taking a hit before I got the truck.

Bought mine from Mopar4less ((800) 748-2139) for $37 + UPS ground shipping. Sender #2 getting tired. #3 sitting on the shelf and will go in with xfer flow 54 gal tank in a few months. Part #4797738

Fix it while driving...

Way back when, when I did the fix, I didn't have time to be without my truck either. So, I dropped the tank, pulled the sender, and put the tank back without it. Sure, the guage didn't work, but it didn't work before either.

Then, after the fix was done, I put it back in. It's been working ever since...

The way that the sending unit is acting right now is when the guage heads toward 3/4 tank, I know that I have 10 gal. left in the tank. I have tested this a number of times and it has been the same every time. Even when I pull the 5er, when the needle starts to move from away above full to the full make, I know its time to start looking for fuel. It make be just the float in the tank that is miss adjusted when the car lot installed the new sending unit. Thats the way that I bought it and so far I have not taken the time to drop the tank. .

A note to RHARVEY

Rick,

Unhook the leads to the sender unit and see if the fuel level reading drops on your gauge to empty. If it does, then you know it's for sure the sender in the tank. This test can be done without removing the tank fairly quickly. After tank removal, the sender could be rehooked up to the wires and you could manually raise and lower the float with your hands and see if it will go from full to empty. The sender unit is held in only by two screws(once out of the tank) that go into plastic. Maybe on of your's came out and the thing just swinging around on one screw. When I removed my dealer installed bad unit the screws were loose. Just an idea. Herb:)
