Finally got the truck put back together last night and should have her going tomorrow after a vacuum pump rebuild, pulling the radiator to clean it and new belts, hoses, thermostat and idler pulley.
I noticed some kind of sensor under the driver side battery. Its a plastic piece about an inch in diameter and has an electrical connector.
I know in helicopters they use this to activate a warning light for a hot battery. Is it the same for our trucks?

yes. sort of. If the sensor detects a hot battery it turns off the charging. it is one of the items to check if there should be charging issues.
