Serial number

Seems like a silly question, but can anyone tell me where on my '98. 5 Cummins I can find the serial number? Thanks.

vehicle # is on the tag on the door jamb and on the vin plate on the drivers dash visable through the wind shield. The engine #'s are on a plate on the drivers side of the gear train housing

Thanks, Nutter. It was the engine number that I needed.

Mine is on a rather distinctive plate, on the left side of the engine (left as seen looking from driver's seat), somewhat forward of the fuel filter and fuel pump, near the front of the engine. The nameplate data includes model, Cummins Engine Co. , and some other info; serial number is in there somewhere.

That distinctive plate you are looking at,is the engine ECM.
The engine serial# (aka CPL#) is on the small rectangular aluminum plate on the timing gear cover,kinda underneath the upper radiator hose. It should start with a # like: 56675018.

Disclaimer!! The above engine number is just an example number. I do not own this engine or know anyone who does,and as far as I know it is just a made up number. So calm down DC!

The data plate also shows the engine build date (in lower rt corner). The '98 24v I used to have was built Dec. 23, 1997. It was a VERY EARLY 24 valve but was 100% trouble free through 60,000 miles except for 1 TPS.

My current '00 engine rolled off the assembly line at Cummins on Friday Jan. 21, 2000.
