Starting to sound like a broken recrod. I found a truck that has 4. 10 gears for sale kinda near by. I RARELY tow. Is this the right truck. Will the gear issue drive me nuts? I have owned 4 dodge trucks , the last 2 were diesels and will stay diesels. They were all 3. 54 geared. Tell me about the 4. 10's. Thanks

Dave

auto or manual? If it's a manual I'd pass it by and look for 3. 54's. Having 4. 10's is the only thing I don't like about my 5 speed truck.

If you do not tow then you want the 3. 54's. Auto/4. 10/towing go together. Little busy at 70 with 4. 10's. SNOKING

4:10's can be good

I run 4:10's with an auto 4x4. I have a love/hate relationship with them. They are the best for towing and offroad and I love them for that... but. . my guess is that I gain about 3 to 400 rpm (about 2200rpm at 65mph) so they use about 3gph more than the 3:54s and the noise level of the truck is quite a bit higher (even with extra insulation) and the extra rpm must shorten the, overall, life of the engine. If I bought a new ctd, I would probably go with the highway gears; mostly for mileage, unless you plan to tow heavy.

I have a 6-speed with 36" tires and I always find myself looking for 7th gear.

If I had it to do over I would order 3. 55's instead of 4. 10's. Nice to have for the benefits occasionally, but for most of the time 3. 55 would be better.

01 CTD 4x4 quad cab, long bed, HO motor, nv5600, 170K miles. I talked the salesman down to $12,000. 4. 10 gears and manual trans.

Next topic, if i chose to go with it how hard to re-gear to the 3. 54??? what kind of costs am I looking at? Thanks

Dave

4:10s are great for towing and city driving but if you drive mostly on the hiway you'll be better off with 3:54s. Mileage wise I see 10-13. 5 towing 17-20 on the road not towing with 4:10s but i tow mostly(11800 lb 5th wheel):D

If the truck is clean, that sounds like a pretty good price. 6 speeds are like gold in our area, there just aren't many around. I say if the truck is in otherwise good shape, go for it and convert to 3. 54 if you cant stand the 4. 10. I will admit that with 33" tires and 3. 54s i still wish i had a 7th speed some times when blasting down the freeway. The 06 in my sig has the g56 with 3. 73, which gives just about the exact final ratio as a nv5600/4. 10 combo, and you definitely notice the increase in RPM, but on the other hand the truck is so much quieter than my 01, I dont care that much.

I put 4. 10s in my truck because it was pretty gutless towing with 3. 55s.

2000 rpm is about 73mph, so it's not bad at all.

I have 4. 10's, I love it. instant rpm's, fun to drive and i usually do 70-75 down the freeway and dont see the big deal. Also I have never had 3. 54's so I cant tell you the difference. All I know is I have plenty of take off and plenty of top end. That's my opinion on them with my experience.

Why did you sale the 01 and the 02 for:confused:

GREAT NEWS!!! I went to the dealership that had the 01,4x4 HO quad cab LWB. The truck was TOUGH. Lots of rust, loose front end, oil leaking, and on and on. I didn't even talk to the salesman, my wife was NOT impressed.

We left that town and I knew of another truck on the way home. 01 CTD,4x4 HO Six speed, quad cab SWB. After some dealing, I purchased this truck for right around $14,9. I pick it up on monday.

I took your guys advice and found a truck with 3. 54 rear end.

Dave

PS... I sold the 02 because I was in a bad accident with it and it was never the same as before the crash. The 01 was sold because I was getting married and I was offered $3500 more for the truck than I payed for it. THE TIME WAS RIGHT ON BOTH OF THOSE TRUCKS.
