Folks,

Yesterday, I put the lever in reverse and heard a new hard to describe noise. I put it back in park. I first thought maybe (hoping) some brush dragging, but saw nothing.

Put it back in reverse then drive, no problems. Drove a few miles and all seemed fine.

It sat for 20 minutes then problems again. When I put it in drive, noises and wouldn't move. Back to park and no noise. I tried reverse and drive a few times, again noises and no movement. Back to park, switched 4WD on, no noises and was able to get it to move. Switched 4WD off and drove home about 15 miles. Seemed fine those 15 miles.

Looked up from underneath, all appeared OK. Linkage seemes correct and fluid level also correct.

I never haul heavy or hard. Only 32K miles. Any ideas? Looking for experience before I take it to Dodge.

Thanks,

John

can you attempt to describe the noise? deffinetly check all battery and ground connections... . that trans is full off solenoids that make it work.

I've been trying to come up with a good description of the noise, but can't. Not a solenoid type of movement. Mechanical, not electrical (I think). Not real grinding, but wouldn't be surprised to see something in the pan or xfer case. Seemed to come from the forward section of the transmission or rear of engine. Sounds expensive $$$. Going to take it for a short drive (if it moves) tonight, then to Dodge soon. Still looking for ideas.

Have you had any issues with it since then? Were you in 4wd shortly before it was shut down the last time when the noise first started.
Since shifting the transfer case in and out of 4WD, I would suspect it has something to do with the transfer case.
If the noise was in the transmission, I doubt it would have gone away when you shifted the transfer case.
