I have this problem where my srepintine belt is not running true. every thing looks square except the air conditioner. i've even replaced the tensioner. i've had the air conditioner off 2 tmes now. there is no movement for it. my belt will run on top of grooves instead of in. it's been like this for a year squeels like a pig when in the groovees. . now i'm hearing a odd clicking noise in this area. ( not dowel pin as it's pinned, and i ran engine without belt and it went away) anyway now my belt is running even further over. do you think maybe my conditioner pully is moving off?

No expert here, but would it be possible to run a streight edge between various pullys for an alignment reference. Then, look for one that does not match?

Anything been replaced lately? Happened to me when I replacet the alternator. Bad casting I guess, throwing the belt out of line. Could not see it with a straight edge either.

everything is in line except for the air conditioner and it's been there since 1999. the only reason i new there was a problem the first time as i replaced the belt. after a few thousand miles it started sqeeking and that's when i started digging. i have the whole front apart twice and can't figure out why the air is off center, which puzzles me cause it just bolts up with no room for error.

I killed the dowel pin on a 12 valve the other day and when i re-installed the belt it was one groove off to the inside.

The tensioner was worn from back to front, i replaced it with one from Napa and it would do the same thing.

I broke down and drove 45 miles one way to the local cummins store and bought the original part and now the belt runs true.

Hope this helps,

John

are you kidding me? mines from napa too. brand new. my old pully was worn funny and why i replaced it, but the napa one never did cure anything.

Mine did the same thing when the waterpump bearing started to go out. It dodnt leak or make any noise but when I stuck a prybar inbetween the block and waterpump I was able to make it move.

It was hard to spot cause the waterpump pulley doesnt have grooves etc...

my pops has worked at a dodge/cummins dealer for about 25 years and the man states that it can be numerous things throwing it off... the tensioner bent, aftermarket alt. , and yes the difference in NAPA and CUMMINS is diff. BE AWARE i have seen it where if that dang belt flies off there then it can potentionally hit the sensor next to the case. . ? AND THEN YOU"LL be PO'd get it fixed man mine on my 96 was the tensioner bent

Mine was doing the exact same thing, running out of the groove to the inside of the AC. I ran it awhile without the AC using a shorter belt until I could get the DAYCO original part. Bought it at Rock auto. This cured the problem.
