I need a new tensioner, but ran into a small problem at my local Cummins dealer. I went to the local Truck Tractor Semi dealer's parts department to get my part, He says he can get it but needs actual Cummins part number. He lists a tensioner for a 5. 9, but the "dog" on the rear is at the wrong position. Anyone have the Cummins part number for the 'ole '92? Any help appreciated,,Thanks 3dracer

Are you sure you need a tensioner? What's the problem? I had a squeaking problem and solved it by putting on a new "gatorback" belt.

Yeah,,,Belt problem

The actual problem is the belt squeaks all the time and drives you nuts. Some diesel heads around here said the tensioner needs replacing,,,"weak", But if a new Gatorback belt works, I'll look for one. Is that a Goodyear brand? The only problem is around here no one sells Goodyear belts,,where can one be bought at?? Thanks for the help,,,,3D racer

This condition happened with my' 93. I first suspected the idler and replaced it with the H. D unit from Practical Solutions. -- email address removed -- . This was a good move as the bearings were going in the stock plastic unit. This is an all steel unit with sealed bearings, is wider, and was under $50 at the time. One cannot buy just the pulley from the Stealer, you have to buy the whole assembly for about $180. 00. This did not solve the problem however. It turned out that my idle was too low. I have an auto and AC and it would be especially bad at a stop in gear with AC on. I set it so that it would maintain minimum 750 RPM in that state. This is probably higher than necessary but No squeal since.
