Couldn't get on some of the topics tonight, got server busy message. I thought this was resolved a few weeks ago. I suggest either get fixed or turn off the non-members. (if that would help)

One step ahead....

Yes, "this was resolved a few weeks ago"..... But, since December, the number of visitors to the site has been increasing every week. Every time we make changes, the site grows more so we're just staying one step ahead.

The average server busy time now, according to the logs, happens about 5 times a week, and averages less then 3 minutes each time.

Shutting off the access to guests is not feasible. If your browser loses its login cookie and guests are locked out you would be unable to log in.

We've proposed solutions:

1. Trim posts... . but everyone wants the server fast AND they don't want us to get rid of old threads.

2. Change the search word minimum to 4 characters..... but everyone wants the server fast AND they want the 3 character minimum.

3. Limit searches to one forum at a time... . but everyone wants the server fast AND they want full search.

I thought that was why we had a password -so we could get the cookie. I wipe cookies out of my computer on a regular basis and then simply re-enter the password the next time I come on site.

Ken, would limiting some folks' half page long signatures with flashing lights and bells help things along? Seems like sort of a waste when a person posts a one line response two or three times in a thread with a mile long signature. Maybe making the Show Signature box something that has to be checked every time would help.

Another suggestion, eliminate the search all together or make it better , it's pretty worthless right now since many of things we need to search for are three letter abbreviations. I've rarely had results and don't waste my time with it anymore. I'm sure many others would agree

Search

I have had good luck with the search. I would not like to see it disappear. I do agree with illflem on the issue of the busy signatures. Are they really necessary? I understand the main intent of the sig is to describe your rig and the mods you have put on it.
