You guessed it, got the Service DEF system See Dealer on the screen this past weekend. After a few miles got the 5 MPH max speed in 125 miles service DEF system . At that point I was too far from my home dealer, and close to where we were going on a hunting trip, so hunting we went. Called a dealer from the hunting camp that was within the 110 miles that I had left on the countdown , and asked about the particulars, and what had to be done, got the information.

Well yesterday on the way to the dealer I called, I was getting the countdown popping up on the screen every mile, I finally left it on that screen, well after a few miles around the 80 mile mark the warning went away, and was not in the stored messages . Not wanting to take a chance parked the fifth wheel at a truck stop for the night close to the dealer I called, and got in this morning to be checked out. Of course it still had the check engine light on.

Here is the findings quote : " Found code stored for DEF Quality ( P207F ) Checked DEF condition and found within spec. Tech inspected DEF injector and found OK , cleaned off a little deposits and reinstalled . Ran DEF flow test and found good. Cleared codes and ran self test . Pass. All good now."

In my case it healed itself, other then needing the codes cleared. and in reality there was nothing really wrong. It stopped the mile countdown, and at that point I could have driven for who knows how long. Per the service tech, he said that are a very sensitive system. He said this DEF thing is a constant problem they see, and this is a pretty small dealership in a fairly small town.

I have used nothing but Peak DEF, purchased at Walmart. The store I usually buy from has a date on it. The date on this last box was 10/06/16. I am assuming that is the sticker that the store puts on them when received, not necessarily the manufacturing date. I added a box of 2.5 gals. last Wednesday which put it on the full mark. The tech also told me sometimes when it gets filled it triggers that service warning after a few miles

I got the same message last March it flashed on the screen just long enough to read, it did that a couple times, never got a check engine light or countdown. All was good until now.

I wish these trucks had the technology that would prevent these DEF error messages and CEL activations at the first wisp of a perceived problem. It's not as if the trucks going to self destruct in the next 2 seconds because the computer "detects" bad def, not enough def in the tank or not enough DEF being injected into the exhaust.
I had the very similar issue just after I bought our '16 3500. We were 100 miles from nearest Ram dealer on a Sunday. Next morning headed for dealer but the See dealer now message had disappeared but the CEL was still lit. Got to dealer who said no stored message detected and CEL should disappear within a few stop/start cycles(which it did). Pretty disconcerting when the message popped up as were at the top of Sequioa National Park.

I was pretty much in the same boat. If anything give the owner more then just the 150 miles, mine actually didn't give me any miles at first when I got the warning. When it did it was 125 miles. The dealership I went to was a Ford ,and Ram . Take it for what its worth they liked the Motorcraft DEF over anything. Ford also has different shutdown system before the limp mode ,sounds like several hundred miles. I can't see where Ram couldn't go that way.

You better hope you are within 150 miles or have cell phone service to call a tow truck or you are going to have a long trip at 5 MPH

monitoring the def system is mandated by law not Ram,going the VW way would not be a good idea eiter

I have no issues with the system being mandated, my issue is the amount of miles to get it to a dealer or fixed. Does Ram think every dealer or repair shop is within 150 miles, or we have cell service to call for a tow truck or whatever. Granted you may get to somewhere ,but at 5 mph its going to be awhile. They don't have to do any thing other then the right way, but they could add some reasonable miles before the limp mode. Its just programing Ford does it ,why not Ram  And I don't want to hear go buy a Ford, I'm just stating something as simple as programing the limp mode.

I am at a loss. I recently purchased a used 2015 2500 Big Horn 6.7 diesel. The issue is that the DEF registered 100% and still does after about a thousand miles. There seems to be zero consumption of DEF. It is also true that occasionally I get a "Service DEF System", SEE DEALER on the dash. It self clears after about 30-60 seconds. Outside of this experience there does not seem to noteworthy issues. What is going on with this and do I really need to take it to the dealer? I am a highly proficient mechanic but am new to Dodge and Cummins. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I have gotten just the Service DEF System See Dealer, and its disappeared after a few seconds the first couple times, no CEL or codes. The last two events went into the countdown with CEL, and P207F code, only to disappear around the 80 mile mark, with just the CEL remaining.

The DEF should be moving off the full mark after a 1000 miles, its seems to take awhile before the gauge on mine moves, but just have never payed much attention to how many miles. The DEF consumption is a lot more when towing, and in a 1000 miles I see a fair amount used.

Cummins2014 I am not sure you know this but I throught I would bring this topic up...I myself would never go by the store's shipping date this has nothing to do with the manufacture date of Peak's Blue DEF. Inside the box on the container itself has a long number this number breaks down to the month date year it was manufactured. For example if the 2 gallon jug has this number stamped on it CP 18324 6 5311... So CP is the plant 18 is the year of expiration so it was made the previous year 2017 next the 324 is a Julian date so if 2017 has 365 day's minus 324 leaves 41 days,so minus the month of January 31 days leaves 10 days So this product was made 2/10/2017. Many people have made the mistake of the ship code to the store well like Peak customer service told me it could be sitting in a hot warehouse for 2-3 months then shipped to a store in a hot truck container, all the while degrading the mixture because as we all know by now the DEF is to be store at room temperature.I myself fell victim to this when I pick up a 2 gallon mix and open it outside and decoded the number on the jug and found it to be almost a year out of date. Also when filling the DEF tank one must take this very slowly because the needle will lagged what is in the tank.My CDJR service writer show me a you tube video in there office, told me do not top it off,or the tank indicaction will just top off and stay there till some of the DEF has been used then it will drop down real quick to a 3/4 or 1/2 tank full.

Thanks, I have become aware of the correct reading of the date code, after these DEF warnings. I actually called Peak, and was told how to read it, CP18324 6 5311

CP Plant manufactured
18 year manufactured plus 1 making it 2017
324 days remaining in the year it was manufactured
6 5311 batch code or number

And so here is my most recent finding.

What would be the next reasonable step? While I have had a few different codes come up since I bought this truck used just a couple thousand miles ago, this is the most recent. All of the previous codes are related to the DEF system as well.

Possible Causes

DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID PUMP RECENTLY INSTALLED, BUT NOT FULLY PRIMED
LOW DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID LEVEL
CONTAMINATED DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID
DEF PRESSURE LINE DAMAGED/LEAKING
DEF INJECTOR PHYSICALLY STUCK OPEN
DEF INJECTOR RESTRICTION
DEF SUPPLY TUBE RESTRICTION
DEF SUPPLY PUMP ASSEMBLY

I have found cases where a bad frame ground has caused this and some with corrosion in the harness connector. With out the ability to perform the scan tool prime test it's going to be tough without spending some big coin. The def pump is not cheap

I had most of those problems on my 2014 DRW SLT (currently 375k mi) After spending thousands of dollars between tows and troubleshooting, replacing the DPF for another $2k with an updated version and update flash cured the problems. Apparently the ammonia sensor was eliminated and wiring harness to it terminated. It's been ok for nearly a year now. A few months later, I received a recall notice on the DPF. Truck shows no recall outstanding so still trying to get my $$$ back for the DPF job.

Not that it will make you feel any better but if thr FCA data base shows you have the updated scr your truck is not included in the recall

I received the recall notice (not long after coughing up for a new SCR), stating to wait for another letter when parts are available. I did my own recall search last week and didn't see anything. I will be going for a refund for the SCR, tooth and nail with the history of previous wasted effort repair work and lost income as a result of their faulty components/service. I've really had enough gouging by Chrysler and their service shops! Going down kicking and screaming...

Tottaly understand it’s a pricey repair.I replaced many of the scr’s before the recall under warranty.I could see a recall coming with the high failure rate on an emissions part
