I need to get a service manual for my 01 and would like to know can anyone tell me if the service manual offered in the back of the onwer manual is a complete bumper to bumper service manual or not?

For what its worth I called and ordered my manual and asked that question. I was told that this is the new manual that covers the 2001. 5 with the rear disk brakes, etc.
Will see when it arrives in about 10 days.
Will post what I get.

The manual offered in the back of the owners manual is the very same one they use in the service dept at the dealerships,it will most likely have more info than you will ever need but well worth the coin if you do your own service or repairs.

I'll be curious to see what Elk Man gets. I've seen postings from others who got a manual in two parts. The newer model (200. 5)being the second part.

I want to wait for the Single Book edition!

And a manual is indispensible for anyone who plans to keep his truck. Even if you only use it to hand it to your mechanic! #ad

The only sad point is why do they charge so darn much $$$$$ #ad
Not fair! No way that manual should cost so much.

Here's my. 02, I ordered the 2001. 5 manual's, got 2 books (no way all the info would fit in 1 book). These books cover everything about the truck in detail, unlike some Haynes books I've used. I called the 1-800# in back of the owners manual and it was here in 5-7 days UPS. The books are a few $$$, but if they help me keep my truck out of the dealership they have paid for themselves. Remember the old saying> If you want it done right do it Yourself.

Next time you buy a car or truck, negotiate the service manual with the deal. I consider the unwillingness of a dealer to include this necessity a deal breaker and tell them so. Let them caugh up the 100+$ for it if they want to sell the truck. I have always gotten it included and I always bring it up after I negotiated the best price so it appears that the service manual is a deal breaker for the dealership instead of it being so for you. Make them squirm!
I learned a long time ago that there are stratagies to get your way at a sale. Come into the dealership late in the day on Saturday toward the end of the month. They need to fulfill sales quotas and they want to go home. If negotiations are not going your way... leave and come back the next day or for a week if necessary until they do and go to the same salesperson each time. Do not allow them to switch people with you. Do not dress in a suit and act unpredictably. The last thing a dealer wants is a scene with an irate customer no matter how crazy they may appear. Remember, the sales people don't have to deal with you after the sale and you don't want them to be your best friend either. Go into the dealership prepared for a long protracted battle. Check online to see prices, fees, and promotions. Download the paperwork and when necessary pull them out and say, "I want to see the invoice". Push until they comply and never, never concede to one of their demands no matter how trivial it seems. Write them a check for the ammount your willing to pay ,even if you don't have the money, and tell them that they can rip up the check and the deal is off if they can't swing it for that amount and you will go elsewhere. That always gets their attention. Use their tactics on them. You are on their turf and they have the homefield advantage and they are masters at the game. Their one dissadvantage is that they can't follow you home to continue the negotiations. You ,however, can return rested and resume the fight at any time and leave at any time. Their greed and the necessity of timely negotiations favor your positive outcome as long as you don't let them wear you down. You can win! OR you get the perfect dealer who says, after you inquire about that truck,"Sure, I can sell that truck at 5000$ under invoice and liftime service included for free".

Thunderball,
I've got the 2000 factory service manual with the 2001 supplement and both of these cover everything from A to Z as far as our RAM trucks. I'ts got more info. than I'll ever need. Just my 1/2 cent.

Paul, when I bought my 2500 I got them to throw in a service manual, bug guard, full tank of fuel, trailer ball mount w/ball and rent a tow bar for me to tow my old truck 600 miles home. That was after they knocked $5k off the sticker. I had to walk out twice and have them chase me down. It helped quite a bit that I bought the last '95 on a lot full of '96s. I stopped in to visit the salesman four years later,he still wasn't smileing, but took me out for lunch.

I to am wiating to make sure that they have the proper manual/manuals for my 2001. 5. Do they cover the 235hp as well as the 245HO? How about the latest Auto Trans and their specs? I bought a VW diesel in 1981. I bought the factory(Bently)shop manual. At the time, they were getting $30. 00 for it. That manual paid for itself honestly 100 times over in savings to me for work that I did on my car and work that I did for pay on other peoples cars. By the way... . the two times I let VW work on my car(warranty), they screwed it up major!

Hey

Thanks guys for all the input, will order mine in the next day or two.

Thanks again.

Paul, you're my hero! I too dispise the dealer 'lot weasels' and have come to the point in life where I just don't want to deal with them! Just too darn taxing! So I spent my time on the web, and when on the lots physically looking at the trucks, avoided the 'staff'.

Luckily I was ordering out a new one, so I could get away with the absolute minimum contact and avoided all the haggling. After researching the Invoice and Cost on the web, I just shopped by telephone until I found a dealer willing to sell to me at my price in relation to invoice.....

If one were to want one off the lot, then your work is cut out for you and you gave some very sage advice.

Today the vast majority of "Car Salesmen" don't live up to their name and don't know much more than how to push you into an "impulse buy" and get you to sign on the bottom line..... So the past 3 trucks I didn't bother with them. I looked up the info myself. Wasn't easy sometimes, but I did my research and got the truck I wanted.

I do have to admit that I went to a small town 5 star dealership, and even though I had my antennae up and back against the wall, they made the transaction with no tomfoolery or skullduggery, and the truck even came in $400 less than what was expected! If they wanted they easily could have buried the $400 and I'd never had known.
I went with them theorizing that a small town rural dealer has to be in it for the 'long haul' and can't go around screwing customers; the word would get out and they'd be kaput.

It truely is a shame that Car Salesmen don't take pride in their profession. Some do. Most don't. They're just 'sliding' and going for the quick sale. They don't even bother being knowedgable about their product!

My appologies to any Car Salesmen that may be reading this tirade. I don't think there are, but if you are out there, Sorry.
