I don't know if this has been covered before but here it is anyways.

I just purchased an 05 and was going through the manual and found that it has a greasable CV "Constant velocity" joint on the t-case end of the front driveline.

It requires a grease needle to lube it. Good to see again but I am just letting people know about it. I do not think mine has ever been greased in 24k miles it was clean as new. It took 15 pumps with a hand grease gun to get it to start comin out.

If nobody knows where it is or what it looks like, it is behind the front u-joint on the front side of the cv joint and it looks like a silver button tapered into the middle with a small hole in the middle of it.

This is Just a friendly reminder to all. :)

They did away with greasable cv's for quite a while now they snuck them back in.

It pays to read the owners manual. It could save someone some$. ;)

good luck with my front drive shaft on my 04.5

On my 04. 5 I did all u-joints and ball joints around 85,000 I think (I forget). the axle joints, rear shaft joints, and ball joints were essentially dry and rusting! This was expected.

HOWEVER, I did the my front drive shaft last and when I took it all apart there was a good amount of grease left. I'd say 30% or something? enough to need more, but not enough to for the part to fail. Same with in the CV joint. I was pleasantly surprised. I suspect 100,000K miles this front drive should of lasted.

I did replace the joints with serviceable and greased the CV. I don't recall a services needle deal in the CV.

While looking things over today under the hood I found a sticker on the radiator support pointing this out also.

I went to napa a purchased a grease gun tip that looks like the end of a ball point pen. I works perfect for getting to the lube point.

About how much grease does this joint hold inside? I do three pumps on the grease gun every 2 1/2 K. Just wondering if this is sufficient. I figure if I do it regularly I shouldn't have to put too much grease in.

I heard on a quiet night, you can hear trucks rusting in Minnesota?:-laf

bwall7116,

I always fill till it start coming out around the edges. My CV joint does not have a grease fitting, I just packed as much as I could in there and put the joints together.

Dfizwater,

ha! well, mine isn't rushing just yet. just a few places has surface rust on the frame and I corrected that.

2 years ago, they had more salt then snow on the roads. this year, they are using a different chemical. Prolly going to have deformed kids as apposed to a rusty truck.
