When I installed my rebuilt pump (RPM Diesel, Ft. Lauderdale $325!), I just put it back in the way I took it out, using scratch marks. I would like to set it accurately, but don't have a clue how. The crummy little plastic timing peg can't be the best way to find TDC!

I'm assuming you used the pin to locate TDC for the removal. As you posted you have replaced the pump, did you assemble it to the engine in the locked or unlocked condition? If you were fortunate enough to pull off the pump at TDC with the pin, did not rotate the engine position, re-mounted the locked pump, unlocked it, and ALIGNED the cast in alignment marks, and final tightened the pump mounting bolts, you are in a position to fire it off. After the bleeding of the air in the system, I would suggest running over to a competent injection shop for an accurate spill port timing procedure. If it's a Cummins shop, Cummins bulletin 3810348-01 and 3810486 covers the procedure, and 3377259 is the tool(s)
A good shop (not Cummins) usually use the Snap-On timing set.
Hope this helps...

That helps. I've been running it for close to two years since reinstalling the pump. I was hoping that the spill port timing was something I could do in my garage. Guess not.
