After a couple of 50,000 mile checks I do mine at 100,000 mile intervals. Even then the adjustments are very slight, or not needed.

I cant say what the previous owners did on mine but I would not be surprised if I did them for the first time at 203k. Seemed like I was the first one to touch almost anything on my truck engine wise. I'm looking forward to doing my oil analysis at the next change to get a base line started and see how that looks.

Thank you all for the input. I had been going to 35K or 40K and checking them but not finding very much adjustment needed.
I appreciate your help and advice on this.

My valves were not checked for 150,000+ miles. I decided to take my truck to a cummins service shop and have them checked. They said only one was out at .013. On my drive home I smelled paint. Got home, popped the hood and saw this... fresh coat of paint. Still don't know if I should be glad or annoyed

I would be annoyed....why would the shop paint the valve covers and other parts!!! Wow!

Yeah I don't know. Funny thing is the next day I got a call from cummins taking a survey on my experience (not the shop but some foreign entity). Told them I wasn't sure how I felt because they did something without telling/asking me first. I am considering calling the shop up and asking to have a word with the manager. Albiet someone will lose a job (mechanic who did the paint)....

Yeah, that is odd!! I got into a deal at a Dodge dealer in Kansas the other day. I took my 97 in to have the oil and filter changed along with the fuel filter. Well, after I got it home I discovered scar marks on the fuel filter canister from oil filter pliers. The tech thought the whole canister twisted off!! Plus, when the tech was trying to start the rig, I had to stop him from cranking and cranking and show him the primer pump on the engine to fill the fuel filter. He didn't know it had one. But then again, the truck was probably older than him!

I think I've checked the valves on the 97 at about 45K and it has 95K on it now. Thanks for your input.

Yeah and to have a phone call from an outsourced survey company is a slap in the face! I would recommend having a word with the manager and ask for replacement parts that are in similar condition to what you had before. Any part that is painted should be replaced with a good quality used part or NEW part if not available in a timely manner!! Wow! It is just not acceptable to do this to your truck. I would not call on the phone.....go to the shop and ask to speak to the manager in his office. Good luck talking/dealing with the manager and don't leave the office without it being resolved. It is only fair to fix your truck right!
