I had my diffs changed out with the Shaeffer synthetic 75w-90w about 2-3 weeks ago. Bad news I had alot of Chatter while making turns, needless to say back to amsoil severe gear for me. Just wanted to keep everyone updated,on the shaeffers project. The engine oil (supreme 9000 5w-40 syn. )has been fine up to this point. coobie :)

I don't know the part number at the moment, but try some "friction modifier"

from Ford. Probably other sources for similar stuff, but I'm familiar with the Ford product. It's most common use is in Mustang 8. 8 rears. It changes the friction characteristics of the fluid to eliminate the chatter.

Coobie,

Sorry to hear of your problems with the Schaeffer's gear oil. I'm really surprised to hear that news, especially, with their great reputation.

Why not call your dealer and/or Schaeffer's main offices & see if they can help you out. If not, maybe they can offer you a partial refund or some other kind of compensation.

I've been running RedLine 75-90 in my diff's. with no problems, at all. I got ahold of the distributor, here in Phoenix, & was able to get it for $7. 00/qt. There are a couple of places, online, that sell it for $7. 00/qt. , also. I told the distributor that I could buy it from them, or him. Didn't matter to me. The RedLine is a fully synthetic & may offer you another option.

Good Luck, with your "chatter".

Any chance you might have a U-joint going bad?

Very interesting... I was just about to order full schaeffer fluids for my truck. Did you change your transmision and transfercase fluid out with the synthetic ATF?

coobie,

Sorry ot hear about this. I am the one who first chimed in on your first post. I have had 0 problems changing diffs every 50,000 and all filters and oil every 10,000. I have never experienced any type of chattering. See Ya. Using Schaeffers since 25,000 miles current mileage 209,363

Joe,u-joints were all replaced with greasable ones,so I know that is not the chatter problem :{ I have spoke briefly with my shaeffer rep about this problem, but he was just getting ready to leave on vacation. I will get back with him shortly. coobie :D

I only heard the chatter when making a turn at low speeds,go figure. I had the diffs changed out again on monday and now the chatter is gone. coobie :)

Since the differentials in the 3rd generation stuff use a non-clutch LS setup, what's in there that would "chatter" in turns?

Especially that would be sensitive to different lubes? I thought only the older Dana axles were vulnerable that way...

Boy Gary thats the $10,000 dollar question? And to be honest with you I don,t know. If I find out I will post it here. Its bugging the crap out of me also. Hopefully I will find out soon and post it. coobie :D

Coobie,

Did you refill with Schaeffers or Amsoil? Also: Does anyone know the difference between # 167 75-140 and # 740 80-140?

I have read all the info on their website. #167 meets Eaton specs, but 740 is Eaton certified. I am ready to do the diffs, just doing my home work. I use their 9000 motor oil and think it is very good.

Schaeffer's doesn't make an ATF+4 equivalent.

I've had same issue with the Amsoil Severe Gear 80w90 after HOt. Towing 9k more then 50 interstate miles then non towing on left turns. I added the liminted slip additive. Haven't towed big that far but the left turn thing went away. I have talked to AAM(says their diffs can't chatter) then Amsoil (no help, really acted like he didn't give a crap) then was directed to the Carson Dodge site where THEY claim in the 06 manual it says USE additive and they add it to the AAM diffs they service. No straight answers from any one. Cost me a U/joint replacement(wasn't needed, looked like new and packed full of greese)trying to figure this HOT and turn shudder out.

I thought 204S-AT was ATF+4

Where are you getting that info. from? I just went to their website and their description of the 204S-AT doesn't say anything about ATF+4. Here is the link: http://www.schaefferoil.com/204_transmission_fluid.html

Ok, I just looked at the tech data sheet on the stuff and it says that it will work on ATF+4 applications  Here is a link to the tech data sheet: http://www.schaefferoil.com/datapdf/204SAT.pdf

Here in San Diego Walmart still had qts. of Mopar ATF+4 for $4. 39. At that price why not use the recommended fluid?

I am sure it will be fine. After much research, it seems our rigs will do very well using any approved lube and rountine maintenance schedules suited to the severity of use. Many like the confidence of being "over protected" and some work their rigs near, or over what they are rated for.

For those; extra protection and the sense of well being, makes the extra cost worth it. Enjoy your truck!

I switched to amsoil at 80k at about 110k I started having a chatter from the diff when making low speed turns. My dealer told me about the additive when I made the change over to amsoil but told me I probably wouldn't need it. I called an order in for some addative and fresh fluid and haven't had a repeat of the problem. Changing fluid every 60k, I now have 223K of heavy (30k #'s +) hauling. For what most people use their trucks for I don't see the need for anymore overkill than what the factory built.
