I've just noticed a very sharp sounding ping while the truck sits idle. sounds fine normal for a minute or so then a sharp metallic "ping" rpm jump just a tiny bit then normal again for another minute or so. Is this the rail relief valve? I have never noticed this before.

My wife had a 04 for awhile, she rolled it. Amway hers did this at idle put it in gear and it would stop give it a little fuel it would stop. I started to researched it here it was called injector knock. I treated the fuel system with Racor after two tanks it went away. Do know if this is the same problem as yours. You might search for "injector Knock"

It sound like the FCA, what you are hearing is injector knock. The FCA controls rail pressure, when it starts sticking the rail pressure can fluctuate wildly and the result is stumbling, injector knock and sometimes even stalling.

It seems to have gone away. I have been paying very close attention at idle and do not hear anything. I generally use stanadyne performance every few tanks. The fuel that was in when I noticed was not treated, I just ran a few hundred miles with treated fuel. I'll keep listening to make sure. I am assuming that the FCA that came with the II "bag of parts" is different than the stock?

Try CRC Diesel Fuel Therapy. It is usually available at most Napa stores. We have been using it lately for contaminated fuel systems after everything has been cleaned up in the tank and lines. So far very good results.
