just lost 3rd and 4th gear....now what?

well shifting from 2nd to 3rd, while opening her up for the day, she went to free spooling. first thought was drive line but it wasnt clunking around. stopped the truck started off in first fine went to second fine 3rd and 4th are non exsitant now however.

i need some help knowing what all i need to get ahold of to get her back up and running in all 5 gears. a parts list or something of that nature. i need to get it all at once becuase shipping to iceland using military mail service is a laughable matter. no offense to anyone. thank you for your time.

Did you pass the inspection/emissions test?

Sounds like you're making some good power... :D

I'm pretty clueless about the NV-4500's... even though I own one now. From what I hear... they're pretty easy to rebuild, though.

Standard Transmission has all the right goodies and has (from what I have seen... ) the best prices as well.

well sir,

i think she is making decent power. not compared to some of you all, but to me its impressive. for a grociery getter as the guys at work call it.

i did everything i could to keep the smoke down, and yes it did pass the inspection. the emissions part anyways 1. 74 whatever out of 2. i need mudflaps and to trun my exhaust that is it though.

the ispector that drove my truck into the bay and did the brake testing got out and said this thing feels like it has some power. i told him he should see what it can do with the fuel where it should be. he asked a ton of questions and wanted a ride. so i reset her to back to normal and went and gave him his ride. just a straight line 2nd thru 4th up to almost 95mph it was a little over a 1/4 but i had to slow down for the intersection. :D

he was saying a bunch of stuff i cant put on here and blown away that a diesel pick up that big can do that. he drag races and restores old american cars, and he was pretty amazed. so the word is out on her already about her. it should be a fun summer. . hopefuly

that was before the usb1. which is 95% istalled. jerry rigged exhaust flange. but it dont matter now because i cant do a whole lot going 1st 2nd 5th :(

that turbo is awesome though!! i cant wait to get the truck tuned to work with it right and open her up. its going to be fun.

this put the hurt on the water methanol though :( i dont make enough money to properly support this bombing disease

i just need to know if something like this is rebuildable or if i am going to have to get a new one. then i have to figure out how on earth i can get it shipped over here!

thanks for you responce

That's a good story. Yet another 'diesel believer'. Even better that you 'schooled' him with a 12-valve Cummins!

Glad you like the new turbo... I knew you'd see a difference. :D

The NV-4500 is VERY rebuildable. Even if you couldn't do it yourself... . someone over there could easily do it with parts that you provide from any good US supplier.

Perhaps some NV-4500 experts will chime in on this thread to perhaps speculate on what you tore up inside your transmission... . then you can order up some parts.

Matt

i was thinking back and the thing only made a pop sound. that was it. no grinding, pieces of metal getting eaten noises. also now while driving you can take the shifter and it will freely just flop back and forth between third and fourth. no nothing. do you guys think just the shifting fork could have bit it?! because even if it did eat the gear or what ever wouldnt it make noise or something when you tried to put it back into those gears? rather than flopping back and forth? also is there any type of a shear pin in the transmission like a boat propeler or lawn mower? i dont know. i spose its easter and i should be patient.

thanks

I'm thinking that in order to get the real deal on the parts required you will have to tear it apart before ordering. It might be a fork or it might need gears, I've never done a 4500. Good luck.

Do you have a Factory Service Manual? They are complete enough to do an overhaul.

no i dont have any sort of manual for the truck. this is my first dodge and will be my first ever, other than clutch, dealing with a transmission. i am hoping it is the shift fork that broke.

can someone go over what that is going to entail please.

you guys are going to be my best source of information and help.

i appreciate it
