Shell Rotella synthetic 5-40

Diesel guys: I was in Sam's club today and saw 6 gallon cases of Shell Rotella Synthetic in 5-40 blend. Has anybody tried this?

The new Rotella synthetic is the newest of the hydro-processed products (group 3) that will compete head to head with the group 4 oils of yesterday.



The Rotella has a higher viscosity index than both Amsoil series 3000 5/30 and 15/40 HDD&M. The Rotella has a higher flash point than both the Amsoil offerings as well. The Amsoil has a higher originating TBN number, but while Shell starts with a number lower than most other oils in TBN their unique chemistry and detergency additives neutralize acids more quickly and have a greater capacity to consume acids than other oils. Effective TBN is what you are after and not just a TBN number that is pumped up high with lower quality chemistry.
