The 6-speed cap will pop out with a little prying. There is a nut under that. Loosen it and the knob should come off. The drawback of adding an aftermarket know is the thread count is 10MM X 1. 25 (I think). Your Dodge parts guy should have this on his exploded diagram computer. I haven't changed mine yet for this reason.

I changed mine and took a bolt that fit into the new knob, drilled it out and tapped it to the size and pitch of the threads on the lever. A couple hours worth of work made a very cheap and sturdy adapter which lets the world of shifter knobs be adaptable to your truck.

OK, here's what I did on my 96 5 speed. It should work on your 6 speed. Remove the cap on the knob, then take the nut off. It should come right off. I found a used hurst shift handle at the swap meet but you could buy a new one at any auto parts house. Then I reamed out the hole to fit the nut that I took off. I put J-B weld in the hole and then mounted the nut flush with the bottom of the handle. You have to let it dry about 24 hrs to set up and then put on the handle. I like mine and it's easier to grab and shift. Hope this works for you.
