I am going to remove my 5 speed from my 95 to find out why I lost 5th and reverse. In my service manual it says I need a tool # 6783 to remove the shift lever extension. Is it possable to do the job without the special tool and if not where can I buy one? Anything else I should look for?

Thanks for any help, Tom/Idaho

No special tool needed, but an extra pair of hands will make job easier. There is a lock collor that must be pressed down and rotated to remove shift lever. Going from memory, rotating clockwise is locking, counter clockwise is unlocking. Use anything from your thumbs to pair of screwdrivers.

A big pair of snap ring pliers will do the trick(45or 90 degree bend), the coller has two flat sides and two rounded sides put the snap ring pliers in the "corners" and push down and turn counter clockwise and let it spring up and you got it.

First off you probably don't have to remove the trans to check out 5th and reverse. Just pull the back off the trans in the truck. 5th gear and the 5th/reverse synchro assembly is all there. I had a strut break in my synchro assembly and it locked in 5th. For $6. 00 I could have bought all new struts and springs but decided to buy a complete assembly from Quad 4X4. I changed it in 3 hours working on the ground.

To remove the shift lever put a big screw driver or punch on one of the corners of the collar and tap with a hammer at about a 45 degree angle in a counter clockwise direction it pops right up. Putting it back in is more difficult I used a pickle fork (tie rod remover) to hold it down and then used the punch to tap it in a clockwise direction.

Good luck , Rod

5th synchro is in the back section of the transmission, reverse is in the main section. If you lost both gears and everything else works ok, then you will need to drop the transmission and take the top cover off and go from there.
