My boss just bought a 2002 Cummins HO and he was wondering what the optimum rpm to shift at. He is also wondering what the best exhaust brake would be. Thanks.
Well i can't speak for an HO but on my truck about 2900-3000 is perfect. Any higher and it actually gets slower 0-60 times. I cut off . 7 seconds on my stop watch shifting at 2900 compared to redline. Just my 2 cents.
My 2001 HO 6 speed with 34,000 miles seems to do best at about 1700-1900. If you shift there, the rpm drop in the engine matches the next gears engagement rpm pretty close. This results in a 'speed matched" shift. This means less clutch wear.
I have noticed that if you run it up to 2200-2300 then it is sometimes stiff going into third. Less than 1600 or 1700 could result in lugging of the engine in the next gear.
