Does anyone know the shift sequence of a 48RE?

Does it go 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, then lockup? Or can it lockup before getting to 4th? Can it skip gears?

Just curious. Mine works great.

No skipping but can lock-up in 3rd Gear depending on road speed.
Also lock-up in 2nd Gear if Gear is selected manually via the shifter.
Shifting 3>4 can happen (almost) locked.
Automatic downshift 2>1 only happens at very very slow speeds, almost stopped.
If you want to climb a hill at slow speeds you have to manually shift it to first, otherwise it stays in second.
Using a Pac-Brake it looks up in any Gear and stays locked depending on rpm and road speed.

With a mystery switch you can lock it up manually in any Gear and know the status of the lock-up clutch.

Edit: without a LED telling you the state of the lock-up clutch it is hard to tell if you are in 3rd locked or in 4th unlocked a certain speeds.

Thank you! This is very informative! I don’t know the ins and outs of these automatics. My 03 has an NV5600, and my 95 had a 47RH. I don’t think the 47RH locked up in anything but 4th, unless maybe if the selector was in 2nd or 3rd. It seemed like it did a lot of slipping until the lockup at the end, which virtually shoved you back into the seat!

The 48 is way more refined then the predecessors.
Especially yours with the electronic TV, so to say it's the pinnacle of the 727 series and also the end of the line.

Also as a side note, it definitely makes sense to downshift to second gear on an incline, road speed permitting, as then it will lock-up the converter which it doesn't leaving it on D.

By the way, your signature needs an update to the current vehicle.

If I remember correctly yours is an 05, which means the TH button does not lock out 4th Gear but changes the whole shift pattern to later upshifts and earlier downshifts.

Does TH keep the converter locked while descending hills?

I’ve tried updating my signature, but can’t figure out how. It used to be easy, but I’m getting old.

Actually don't know if it keeps it locked but I guess not.
You would need a Pac-Brake to accomplish that.

Or just put in a mystery switch for ten bucks and do it manually.
I have that switch in mine additionally to the Pac and it helps greatly to have the ability to lock it in any Gear.

For the signature, click on your user name in the top right corner of every page, on the drop down menu that opens choose signature.
