I justhad some transmission and transfer case work done on my truck, now I am getting ALOT of road noise through the floor board. I was wondering what, if anything should be between the shifter boots to deaden road noise. Or did they not get it put back together correct or what?

I had mine off a few weeks ago to snug the bolts on the top of the transmission. I don't remember anything other than the boot being there. There are only 8 or 10 screws holding that in but you have to remove the cup holder and surrounding plastic to remove the boot. It's about a 15 minute job. You shouldn't be picking up more road noise there though.

I did that to myself when I ran my CB cable under the cab and through the hole for the shift lever. The bottom shift boot wouldn't seat right,so I ended up using some dumb-dumb to make sure there were no gaps.

There are some recent posts in another thread about packing foam materials into the boots to help with noise reduction. I tried it and did get some improvement. maybe a search can find those other posts... .

Bryan,I put foam in mine after reading your post also,it does make a difference. You would be suprized how much we heed each others advice without posting back. On other forum sites that display times visited the ratio of visits to posts is very high,I'm sure it's the same with the TDR,sometimes I wish this site also had times visited.

Bryan, I too have now read your original post. Raises a couple of questions. Do you put the insulation/stuffing in the boot or in what the boot covers and is that stuff fire retardant/resistant for the location? Would like to give this idea a try myself.

I tried this trick last Friday. It seems that it has helped to cut down on the noise somewhat. I'm always amazed at how much quieter my buddy's '96 auto is in the cab, I think the extra hole in the floor of the 5 speeds lets in a lot of noise. I don't know if this will cure the rattling 4x shifter, as mine only does it on occasion. The stuff I used was called polyfill, I bought it at a local fabric shop for $. 99.
