I understand that the electronic shifting of the 48re makes the installation of this transmission into a 1994 automatic Ram 2500 problematic. Since the control of the stock transmission uses hydraulic control, it doesn't have shift control over the newer transmission. I remember hearing something about a conversion kit (a wiring harness of some type) that allows you to do this. Another solution would be to only have 'manual' shifting of the later model transmission, but I would want normal shifting and not have to shift manually.
Does anybody know who makes this kit (IIRC) and its difficulty of installation? Also any other factors that would be pertinent? I have heard that I also need another driveshaft, but wonder if I could use a 2005 driveshaft (or any part of the 2005, I have a complete wrecked one) Both of the vehicles are single cab w/ 8' beds. I had a friend, who no longer has the time to install it, who told me I could put the entire drive train (except the CR engine) into my 1994 (then I would also have the disc brakes of the 2005, but would have to change something about the hubcaps, they don't use the same hubcaps in the older and newer vehicles.
And to top off my long list of questions, does anybody have any good leads about good mechanics in the Sacramento area? I was thinking of using Orangevale Diesel-they have a good reputation in the local area.
Would this thread be better placed in the conversion forum or in the Common Rail section?
