Ive got a 1997 4x4 3/4 ton 5 speed with 140,000 miles on it

Got a noise from a heavy click to a clunk almost every time I shift and sometimes when I accelerate or decelarate. I've checked the u joints, constant velocity joint . There tight as ever. I changed out the clutch at 100,000. Had the noise before changing the clutch and still can not figure where the damn noise is comeing from.

Anybody got any suggestions on what or where the problem lies?

Lrand,

I have had intermitten clunking noise when shifting sine truck was new.

Dodge dealer said it did that because slack in the drivetrain components.

Usually when I have a load on or pulling trailer(utility) I don't hear the clunk.

I believe there was TSB out on this stating same thing as Dealer said. Will have to reseach see if I can find it.

I've got the same thing on my 96, but it's an auto. I just had the trans rebuilt (113,000) and the joints and rear end felt OK, but I still have the clunk. I suspect the slack is in the transfer case on my truck.

My '98 5 speed 4x4 will also do a slight clunk if I don't shift it perfectly smooth. I agree with the others in that it's just a little drive train slack some place. It’s probably nothing to really get excited about. I want to get under mine some time with it in gear and the rear wheels off the ground and see how much slack there is and maybe where it's coming from.

I have the same clunk also I think it has done it since the day it was new. I have had all the univesal joints checked and all as tight as ever. So far 60,000 miles and it has not caused a problem. I do believe it has something to do with the 1994 and up. We have a 1990 at work with 143,000 miles and no clunk. I have also owned a 1991 and 1993 clubcab and neither of them had the clunk.

Lrand,

Over looked part on you get the noise (click or clunk ) while decelerating or accelerating. That part is not normal will try and research.

Didn't find normal clunk in TDR's TSB but found it on a invoice.

" Normal driveline slack when load is removed by depressing clutch. " Sounded like balderdash to me but no problems with drivetrain yet (117,000).

If yours just started doing this recently(clunking/clicking) keep looking for problem.
