shifting truck without clutch

Just out of curiosity, how many of you shift your truck without the clutch? Mine shifts easy at around 2000 rpms. I don’t do it while towing but just driving around every once in a while.

This is perfectly fine, as it sounds like you know what you are doing.



Every now and then/every once in a while is perfectly ok. But,, Please remember that these transmissions, although bolted to a medium duty motor, are light duty, passanger style trannys and have synchro's that will wear rapidly if shifted constantly without a clutch.



You need to use the clutch most of the time, but I like to pretend I'm a big rig driver every now and then and shift without the clutch,,

BTW,, Don't leave your foot on the clutch either,, that's just tortue on thet throughout bearing, and it will over heat that bearing in no time, with just a little pressure.

I never do it...

I never shift w/out using the clutch. Been driving standards since 1975. Never had a transmission fail and always get max wear out of clutch. never lost a throw out bearing either.

Good way to snap the input shaft. The clutch (when used) takes up the sudden torque difference and softens the blow to the whole drive train. These pickup truck transmissions aren't made for Peterbuilts, and can't be used as such. Keep it up and miss a few shifts and see what happens.

I used to shift up (and down) without a clutch as a teenager and young man with no problems. I doubt that it is a recommended practide. I quit that practice years ago, but I have never replaced a clutch or throwout bearing. I have replaced very few brakes in all that time as well.

Doing this cost me a transmission at 10,000 miles. 3 to 4 shift was the most common. Also 4 to 3. Syncros went south on fourth gear. DC replaced for free

Britt, Although many a big rig driver does it, "floating" as it's called is not an advisable practice. I've seen pictures of the wear it can cause. Use the clutch------your transmission will thank you later... ... ...
