I posted a classified for my takeoff steel wheels recently with a price plus shipping at buyers expense. I was kinda hoping for a local sale and didn't really research what was entailed in shipping a set of wheels, caps, rings, etc without any packaging. I've been getting responses from out of state folks who of course wanted to know what the shipping would cost, but feel like an idiot because I don't know where to start.

Does anyone know where to start??

Thanks for any help,

Kent

i recieved 3 2000 alum rims from a member in OK . he shipped them in american racing wheel boxes . ups cost was around 30 bucks for all 3 .

try to find someone local that just got new rims .

Your local tire shop should have lots of boxes from wheels that they install on customers cars. :) Weigh them and then go to the UPS site. Simple from there.

Thanks for the responses. The tire shop for the boxes is a great (should have been obvious) idea. I wonder why the great difference in shipping prices between the two mentioned?

Does anyone know off hand what a steel 7. 5 inch rim weighs?

Steel 6. 5" wide wheels weigh about 34 lb. each. I shipped 6 of them to central Cal from Las Vegas for about $65 from a trucking company, Central Freight I think it was. The receiver paid and i think he gets a deal because his company uses that freight company, but check out that means of shipping.

Joe,

Did you ship in boxes? That sounds like a pretty decent rate.

I'd assume that 7. 5s can't weigh much more than 6. 5s. If I called them 38 lbs per, that'd be 10% more. Add 7 lbs for packaging with lugs, caps and rings and I'd be at 45. So if I use 50 lbs per, I'm assuming a safe shipping weight. I know, assumptions are like a$$holes... ... . Thanks for the info.

I used the boxes that my 16x7" Alcoas came in. Check with some trucking/freight firms in your area. Stop by some tire stores that put on aftermarket wheels and scrounge for boxes :D
