I was looking for a rattle when I found that the rear left shock's upper mount as well as a chunk of the cross member have broken off.

The cracking looks to have started either at the rivet hole or at the hole where the fastener for the wiring harness plugs in.

A little grinding, some bending, a bit of weld, and paint and we should be good to go. hope this is not going to be a regular thing !

On an 01??? I see a serious safety issue here... and rust doesn't look like the cause. I wonder if NHTSA would be interested in these pictures?? I've never heard, in normal driving situations, something this basic just BREAKING off!! Holy crap!! This just blows my mind!!

I think you could raise some serious heck on this one, especially when it comes to the safety of the matter. The shock and broken bracket could have fallen down on the ground during normal driving, hit a hole, and driven the entire assembly backwards causing you to loose control.

I still can't believe this was assembled so poorly as to cause what you show in your pic. Guess I'll be looking under my 01 next chance I get for signs of the same thing.

Wow what's the world coming to ?? This guys shock mount breaks right off!!!!! and another member has his frame cracking under the D/S door. What the hell kind of P. O. S vehicles are we buying ?? LOL Damn love the engine.

Glad nobody was hurt.

I have seen shock brackets broken on other vehicles usually the shock is frozen up or bent making the steel take up the movement. I hope on a 01 that the shock is not frozen up.

You're right, rust was not an issue on this.

And just to confirm for you, the shock was not seized either, in fact it's only about 8 months old.

I usually beat the bushings out of the shocks before they wear out, but this time it's something way out there.

My truck is almost always towing a 24' goosneck, while it's not what you'd expect to have happen, it's also not what would happen to a truck that's empty most of the time, at least that's what I keep telling myself.

Thanks for the link.

Hope I'm the last, but somehow I doubt that !!!!

I'm out of the recall group , and I'd rather get it fixed now, instead of fighting with a dealer over it.

Does the shock have full movement? That is something I'd look at for cross member thickness and loose rivets at frame. Let us know how it goes. Mike

I know of at least two other trucks this has broken on, both were 3500 work trucks with over 200,000 miles. Both were fatigue failures that started at the weld that holds the shock mount to the crossmember.
