Does anyone have a secret that they would mind sharing as to how to get the PS pump out and the driver side front shock. My 01 has had really stiff steering ever since I bought it new and I am thinking of trying a different PS pump out on it. I also need new front shocks.

Jason

I changed my shocks last month, start by taking off the nut on the shaft on the top of the shock, then remove the bolt on the bottom, then remove the 3 nuts around the shock tower. If you have gas charged shocks it will push the tower up so push it down and remove the tower. Its hard to get the shock to compress while trying to snake it out around all the PS and brake lines but it will come out. On the pass side it came out past the turbo and air box . The hardest part for me was getting the new ones expanded and into the lower mounts (non gas-charged off road shocks).

Pull the P/S & vacuum pumps as an assembly. Remove the driver's side battery and intercooler tube, disconnect the vacuum, oil, & P/S lines, & the brace underneath the pumps. Then remove the two bolts holding the vacuum pump to the gearcase & pull the pumps out from the top. Separate the pumps on the bench. To reassemble, reverse the process.

You will have to cut the PS line off the back of the pump - it is glued on. There is barely enough extra hose to put back on, so cut only as much as you need to.

Jason, two things can make the driver's side shock replacement easier. First, jack the vehicle up so that the weight is off the front driver's side suspension. There will be much less problem from the expansion of the shock causing awkard removal and fitting of the nuts. Second, a two foot extension bar for your socket makes for easy removal of the nuts holding down the tower. Using these two TDR tips, the job goes easily. Nick.
