At 15k miles my shocks are toast on my '03 2500 4X4. Neither Rancho or Bilstein has a listing yet for a stock height 3G 2500 4X4. Rancho offers shocks only if the truck is lifted 2". Does anyone know of a decent shock set for my truck? I could go back to the dealer for a new set under warranty, but why? They'll just wear out again in a few months, and I'd really like to install them myself anyway.

I got a little over 12,000 miles on mine and have not noticed a problem with the stock shocks yet, but I don't do that much offroading. If yours are already wore out I would go back to the dealership, and have them replace them, and keep replacing them if thats what it took. It's under warranty you should not have to spend your money. If the new one's they install wear out in 10 or 15 thousand miles I would take it back again, wear them out on changing shocks out. :D

No

Tony,

don't want the dealer to touch my truck if possible. Too many rookies with air-gun sickness in most dealerships. (Believe me, I know. I have been in the industry for 26 years & am quite capable of repairing my own vehicles, even when they are under warranty. I'd rather come out of pocket for "minor" repairs than have them get their hands, and air tools, on my truck. ) If some major like an engine or transmission problem occurs, I guess I'll grit my teeth & take it in, but for shocks, I'd rather do it myself & install something better than stock anyway. :)

If you are carrying a heavy load and trying to use shocks to prop it up, get airbags. If you are off roading, look as Edlebrock ISC or Monroe Reflex. They are both multistage dampers that really know the difference between high speed and low speed damping. I ran Reflexes on my 98. 5 for 50K miles and they held up very well. Problem I have seen is that most guys don't understand what the shock is really supposed to do.

I talked to the Monroe left coast Rep and got an excellent recommendation.

Monroe

Charlie, I went to Monroe's website & they only list shocks through 2001 for a Dodge truck. Maybe their website needs updating? Do you know if they are available for a 3G?

Have you checked KYB?

KYB makes excellant gas charged shocks. Not sure if they have listings for the 03 though.

When I was shopping I couldn't find current data on the net either for anyone. Best bet is to go to the "contact us" screen most have and look for a phone no that will lead you to an applications engineer or a district sales type. Answering your kind of questions is their job. I discovered the same when shopping for motorcycle tires - I happened to meet a district sales rep for Dunlop who was making a routine sales call at a local shop. Tons of the latest info.

Rancho RS900X

Here'as the reply I got from Rancho when I asked for RS9000X part numbers for a stock height '03 2500 4x4:

"Thank you for your interest in Rancho suspension products. If you have a 2003 3/4 ton 4WD Dodge Ram, the front shocks are RS99221 and the rear shocks are RS99269. If you have a 1/2 ton 4WD Dodge Ram, the front shocks are RS99282 and the rear shocks are RS99269. "

The latest info........

Jay,

I called Rancho & gave them the parts #'s you gave in your post, their reply was that those (esp rear) COULD be used if neccessary but the extended length was incorrect. They are still under development for this truck. Also called Off Road Warehouse & was told the Bilsteins are under development, due out in spring. I guess I'll keep bouncing until them:(
