Chain saws???

Thoughts on oil bottles...

Evil, which kit are you talking about? The one I asked about to start this thread (shopair) or the other iron pipe kit?

thanks,

david

the shop air kit. that kit is nice but cost big$$$$$$. steel pipe rust in side sending rust through your air equiptment unless you put a good filter at every connection. so i would recommend copper and brass.

Garage Pak is used in the Two Guys Garage shop. It's nice stuff. For the time and effort you save doing the installation compared to iron, it's worth the price for me. I got an Ingersoll Rand 60 gal. upright at sears for $500. They had a red tag on it one day when I went in the store. Turns out they needed to get rid of the floor model. I had been eyeing that thing for almost a year at $1000 :D

I have a feeling I have lots of air tools under the tree right now, so the air lines are the only thing I need besides the 220 volt line I have to run to the compressor.

No PVC for shop air!!!

I don't care what you have done, how long you have done it, or that you have never had an incident. You are just risking too much to use PVC for your shop air lines. I have seen them break too and it doesn't take much of a strike from another object to make it go off. Just read the recomendations from OSHA.

Sure it's a little more work to use copper, but it's much safer and it's hard to put a price on that.

I must agree with the "anti-PVC" sentiment. I have taken two people that had a PVC line rupture on them to the hospital. (I am a Paramedic) One was a mechanic and the other was his 4yro son. Their injuries were very similar to that of shrapnel. I know some people have used it for 3 generations etc. it is not a matter of if it will fail, but when, and who will be the innocent victim. Nobody is trying to degrade someone who uses PVC, we are just trying to prevent an avoidable accident.

I saw the Two guys garage episode where they installed that system and it was neat, but it was $$$$. I would use either Copper or iron pipe.

If you do use PVC, be sure to use the SCH40 that is good to 600 psi and regulate pressure on the line down to 125 psi.

I think most accidents with the PVC is from cranking up pressure on a lower rated pipe and or not having it secured properly. I agree it isn't the best, but you can minimize the risk.

The line that ruptured (post #13) at my work place was likely caused by vibration caused by the overhead cranes. When it blew no one was anywhere near it, not even in that bay. There is no way that I would use any pvc for air lines after having seen the results of that.
