Okay guys here is the story. I have a garage/shop that has two doors. The ceiling in the garage is 10 ft and door #1 is 8 ft and has an old sears opener but no remote. No big deal as none of the trucks I own will fit in that hole any way. Door #2 is basically as big as it can be and still open up. When the door is open it is about 1 inch from the ceiling, actually it touches in one place. I want to put an opener on this door, but I don't see how it can be done as there is no room. Any one have any ideas? I saw an opener in the Home Depot that mounts on the rod with the springs, but I read lots of bad reviews online. I had thought about trying to mount a regular opener to one side of the door, but I don't know if that will work.

Help, I am tired of getting out of the truck to open the door.

Which way do the rafters run? Just thinking out loud, maybe you can "countersink" it in to the ceiling. If they run parallel to the door, you would only need to cut the drywall. Dont think i would notch the rafters if they run perpindicular to the door though.

Check out some of Chamberlin's units. they make residential and commercial openers. They make some stuff that mounts on the side of your door so you don't have to "hack" up your rafters.

+1 Check out Chamberlain

Now those are swet Paychk. I have never put one of those in, but they look pretty cool. The pricetag looks pretty steep though.

The rafters run the wrong way or I would have done that already. I thought about notching the rafters for a little while, but that seems like a bad idea.

Now that opener that rides on the tracks could be just the answer, I wish I could find more info on it. Hate to spend $500 on something with little or no info.

I am going to have an overhead door guy come and tune up my doors and I will ask him while he is here.

Thanks

I have two of the Wayne-Dalton grarge doors with I-Drive openers. They work fine. I Had them installed when I had the garage built three years ago.

The doors are both 9' wide X 8' tall. I wish I had gone with 10' wide X 8"tall. The stock mirrors clear, but I'm not sure about the extended towing mirrors.

I have 12' a ceiling so I have room for the 8' tall doors.

I was told by local Lowes store that people had trouble programming the electronic control panel and remote. I just followed the supplied directions.

John,

I went with Chamberlains on all four of my shop doors and I would recommend that you give them a good look. Stay away from Wayne Dalton's you'll be sorry sooner than later especially if it get's opened alot. What does Lowes carry? Sounds like they put in a 9'10"+ door into a 10' opening. You will have to go with a sidewinder or torsion bar mounted opener. Or replace the door with a 9'x8', then you'd have clearance for an overhead opener.

You should have worked on this when I was still there, I could have hooked you up with a new door. I had a remodeling business so if I needed to I would have reframed your opening. The standard size door I install is a 10'x8' for garages otherwise it will be tight to put a truck into it. My house up there only had a 7' high opening so my truck sat outside all the time, since the house was a tucked under garage.

Cheers, Pat
