I have the cold start flourescents, in the soon to be working bay I have 6 fixtures each one holds 4 foot bulbs. In the storage bay I have two of those fixtures and the rest of the light from the working bay. In the work bench area, 12x16, I have 4 fixtures. Above the office/reloading room, bathroom, 12x26 there is a storage area and it has two fixtures. There are also 6 windows up high, with the 15' ceiling and slightly off white walls there is loads of light.

BTW the overall size is 42x48.

Putting in the expensive lights depends on how much time you will be spending in the shop if it is a better way to go than flourescent lights. If I were expecting to be in the shop 4 or more hours a day most every day I would have looked at something more efficient and brighter. But once the house is finished, I imagine I will be in the shop less than 8 hours a week.
