light black smoke at idle

My truck has been down for 3 weeks, I went to check on it today, not at dealer at a performance shop, and they say they cant get it to run right. I took it in for a cracked injector cause it would run rough and blow blue smoke untill I warmed it up. Now they say the injectors werent the problem, that the ECM wont fire right on cyls #1 & #5??? WTF I got 13,000 miles on the truck and the ECM just up and decides not to fire 2 cyls correctly??? What gives??? What should I do??? I cant go much longer like this. Is this a possible senario??? They say they are getting "correct voltage" at the injector just the truck wont run right.

I personally don't believe that you've got a computer or ECM problem... they are usually very bullet proof today... . Have you tried to take off the BD and other performance enhancers and see if the truck runs normally??

From looking at what you've done to this truck... . it really looks like you've become your own warranty station... .

Are you VERY sure that the company who's had your truck for 3 weeks really has the ability to test it... . When one of mine is down... . the guys who test it for me know whats up within 20 min of testing the truck..... there very sharp... . I should know... its cost me a small fortune to keep a 00 F550 working over 400K miles... . My dodges have been great... .

Yes they have unhooked box etc. truck still wont run. And the reason its at a performance shop and not the dealer is because Im paying for it out of my own pocket. I am my own warranty station... . And Im not complaining.

The 03 PCM was touchy ,But the ECM in 3gen are tough, outside of some type of short it is unlikely the cause. . I don"t like to critize. . I would take possession immediately of the vehicle.

Hearsay or first hand knowledge?

I work on them everyday and that has not been the case for me. I have received bad injectors out of the box.

If they think the ecm isn't firing 2 injectors, move them to different holes, see what happens.

I do not post hear say.

Crown Dodge in High Point, NC told me this.

I bought a brand new 06 Dodge Mega Cab 3500 Dually 4x4 w/Cummins and a 48RE.

I broke down after 100 miles (115 total on the odometer) down the road after taking delivery.

Hows that!!

You can always take it to a Cummins shop, or a Frightliner Peterworth Kenbuilt dealer. (inside joke for those who work at F/L, like I used to)

The injectors should have less than 1 ohm resistance, so you can also test them. If they are getting correct voltage, then either contacts are bad, wires under valve cover, or injector coils damaged. Most likely, you could have loose high pressure lines, or clogged connector lines to the injectors (they have a built in "edge" filter, that self-cleans after a while).

Are you sure the pistons or valve seats are OK? Do a compression check.

Three weeks is incompetence. Have they cleaned carbon deposits?

You can completely turn off 2 injectors at the computer, and there should be no more smoke, unless injectors are cracked, or leaky.

i agree 100% with better than stock, have then check other things, if there is a problem with the injector, they should be able to find it with a computer by cutting out each injector.

your sorta right, but it was also isolated to the 06 auto trucks. Not the 03's. The 03 ECM is a totally different animal than what you have in your 06.

before you go replacing the ecm get it reflashed first most likely will take care of any problems in the ecm. i hear about all of these people buying new ecm's when all they really need is a reflash.

Ditto on what RobertP said. If the ECM is still able to communicate, all it probably needs is a flash. It's at least worth a try.

Assuming that the ECM has separate hardware drivers for each injector, I can see how it could fail in such a way to cause individual injectors to not fire correctly. Swapping the injectors as mentioned above should help confim this.

to elaborate a little further, if the ecm is still communicating then it can be reflashed, even if you had a box that had corrupted files in it, after the reflash those files have been over written and no longer exist. therefore if you have a ecm that can communicate you can reflash and be good to go.

The ECM comes from Cummins.

We had the ECM take crap on our ISX Cummins a few weeks ago. Dealer covered the whole thing. Happened a week after we bought the used truck. So, it does happen.

true about 80% of the time, it really depends on how many corrupt files there are on the ecm.
