Smoke Coming From My New Cummins

test

hey everyone

just wanted to introduce myself

Im Carl and Im in the market to get a 2nd Gen 12V cummins truck

Im looking for a manual with 4wd and extended cab

was thinking about the 98 just cause its a short bed and like that look alot better, but the money is alot more

I was wondering if anyone can point me to a page or give me some advice on problems with these kinds of trucks

If it helps any, my plans are to lift it roughly 5-6", bigger tires wheels etc

but I also plan on doing the go mods as well, and anything I can do for reliability and better mileage on top of that

I was wondering if there is a page here or something that might have a a step by step from a tune up to modifications and maybe problems to look for and/or avoid

Im currently into racing, however the car I own deserves to go to a collector that will keep it garage kept and just keep it for shows. So im currently trying to sell it first before I get my cummins its a 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am #343 of 1555

anyways thanks alot guys I appreciate everything

Carl, there is a lot of info here on the TDR. Just start searching and following the threads and you'll more than you can probably remember. Also, get out and drive some Cummins powered Dodges. You'll find that there is a lot of difference in how people maintain their vehicles. You'll notice that some that are supposed to be well taken care of actually are pretty rough and some are immaculate. This will help you come to terms with how much you're going to have to pay to get what you're going to want to drive. I looked at maybe 70 or 80 trucks and drove about 40 before I found mine. I knew as soon as I pulled onto the road with it, that it was the one I'd been looking for. Kind of like meeting the woman you're going to spend the rest of your life with I guess. Anyway, no substitute for getting out there and seeing what's for sale. Best of luck. By the way, I found my truck on the TDR. It belonged to the father of one of the members, and after several conversations and emailing pictures I felt I needed to buy a plane ticket and fly up to Seattle and have a look at it. It was actually much nicer than I even hoped it would be and the fellow who sold it to me was a gem. Gave me some extra parts, a complete file of maintenance and modification receipts, etc. I couldn't be happier or more confident in my purchase. I've had it a year now and it's been a great truck. Hope you have a similar experience. Jim

welcome aboard Niro,

Head over to the 12v engine and transmission section and just start reading. Do a search for Killer dowel pin and fifth gear... as those are the common big problems. If you just hang out over there and in the 2nd gen section for while you'll start to get a feel for what goes wrong with these trucks. Good luck finding a 12v qc sb with a manual... . I had a hard enough time finding this long *******.

Nick

ps... I love the TTA's, have a thirdgen myself. I used to post a lot over at www.thirdgen.org under Vortecfcar. Later
