Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Afc question

Hello all, I will be coming over to the States in a few weeks and I was hoping for a bit of help with a shopping list for parts that I should have in inventory for the truck. The truck has 180K on it so far. Drive-shaft has already been rebuilt. I already have gauges (glow-scheet; cheap, and not so great-would not recommend), but might pick up a set of the ISSPRO gauges. Injectors have already been changed. I have a spare lift pump, and will try to swap out the FASS DDRP when I am there (the one I have seized). Borgeson box and shaft are already installed.

I figure enough of you out there know what fails, and can suggest what should be on the shelf to keep down-time to a minimum. I can get all of the filters etc, over here...

So far, I have replaced the entire front suspension, with exception of the Upper and Lower control arm bushings, so I have them on my list. Recommendations? Rock Auto and Geno's are where I will order from. Since getting parts shipped here not only takes a long time, is expensive and usually get stuck in customs, (unless I have them shipped to the base), I try to keep an inventory of parts here. Of course I would love to have one of the Blue Chip VP44's in stock, but two grand is not in the budget right now, and the VP44 was replaced by the PO around 40K (miles) ago... Heater core was just replaced.

So here is the list so far. The head gasket and freeze-out plugs are on there since I notice a very slow drop in the level of coolant in the overflow bottle, and do not see any in the oil, nor traces in the motor oil. Truck is used to haul lumber, and as my primary vehicle, so minimising down-time is critical. Hence the need to have the parts likely to fail on hand. Thanks in advance for your help. Jonathan.

  1. Control arm bushings(recommendations?)
  2. Exhaust manifold (recommendations?)
  3. Head gasket and freeze-out plugs(recommendations? Where?)
  4. GOULD STARTER SOLENOID REBUILD KIT(Geno's)
  5. GOULD VACUUM PUMP RESEAL KIT(Geno's)
  6. SIDE COVER GASKET (PUSHROD COVER)
  7. EXHAUST MANIFOLD STUD KIT(Geno's)
  8. TPS?
  9. "CAB FRESH" INTERIOR AIR FILTER KIT (Geno's)

I sure would like to pick up an original POSI unit for the truck when I am there, but that will have to wait until next trip...

got my TPS (APPS) accelerator pedal position sensor, several yrs back for the 99 from dodgecumminsapps.com, genos has them too. Also, something I just replaced on the 01 is the windshield washer fluid reservoir. Had a leak somewhere above the grommets, couldnt find it, somewhere in the seam I guess. Rockauto.com had them with shipping for $28. If no machine shop locally, consider an alternator rebuild kit, have to know whether its a bosch or a denso though, think you pretty much have to remove it to find out as I recall, genos has that.

Thanks, I was looking for the link to his site. Also, my WW bottle is leaking too, good tip. I will check on the alternator, although I can also source new ones here, a rebuild kit would be a better alternative. Funny, most parts can be ordered through Chrysler here, but since the takeover by Fiat, they have closed a few of the parts warehouses, and the supply is getting more difficult. Thanks again. Jonathan

The MAP sensor and crank sensor are also vital to the truck, either of those go bad and the engine will either derate (MAP) or not start at all (crank sensor). I think on the 01s the cam sensor is vital also. They can all be bought through Genos *

I would suggest that you invest in a Raptor lift pump. Very good pressure control, (Adjustable, too) and reliable. Mine's been on the frame for five years, now. No filter on them, but less money up front. Lifetime warranty.

Thanks... just ordered one from Blue chip! Jonathan

I'll take a look, both at Geno's, and at Rock Auto... first the parts book... . JK

I have been looking through Geno's, and I have not been able to find them...

I also added brake lines to the list... only source here would be the dealership... here is the list so far:

Already picked up the TPPS /APPS, and Raptor.

Still missing the freeze-out plugs... I looked at TDR, and I thought there was an article there where the writer obtained them, but have not found it yet... Jonathan

Do you get their catalog? They list all the sensors for each generation truck. Towards the front of the magazine.

I'll have to look, as I received one with the last TDR... however, the wife tends to ,organise' things if I leave them laying around... if you know what I mean.

FOUND it ( on Geno's), jeez, about 50$ cheaper than Rock auto!... . Thanks Geno's

Looks like the exhaust manifold is going to have to wait... no cracks yet, and when they appear, I can still use the truck. Still looking for a source for the brass freeze-out plugs though. I probably will look in the book, get the sizes, and source the at a local NAPA... Thanks to all who posted their recommendations... . J. K.

How do you plan on packin all your new goodies back across the pond with ya? I dont think that list is all gonna fit in yer carry on bag ... . :-laf:-laf

Oh, I have enough miles for an upgrade or two:-laf also picking up a Stihl chainsaw for a bud, and bringing back a few Timber-framing slicks, Nail-guns, and the like... . but, yep, except for the freeze-out plugs, everything is ordered. Thanks! Jonathan.

Check Pure Diesel Power(PDP) and Hoesli Diesel- very good places and I think I've seen the freeze plugs on PDP's site. I also have ordered from PDR. They are well known, you know that:) Scheid also should have those plugs.
I also have had great experience with Vulcan Diesel and Diesel Manor, Source Automotive and Geno's of course. These are the places I've ordered from, and have been very happy- great service. Good luck.
