Has anyone here cut out 3-4 inches of their shift lever and welded it back together? Im thinking about doing this with the spare shift lever that I have and using it in conjunction with the BD short shifter that is already installed.

It depends on your height. I'm 6'2" and I bent it (inside the booth, not visible). It now sits much closer to the driver, 5th is closer than 3rd used to be, and more to the rear. When I open the center storage in the even numbered gears, it just clears the knob by a half inch or so.

I screwed the ball down as far as it goes.

I think shortening may not allow you to reach all gears over the armrest, but depends on how you sit, your arm length etc.....

I shortened the shifter on my 94 and like it. I removed the knob and cut off the stud, then welded it back on about 3 or 4 inches lower. The knob covers the weld so if I had bothered to repaint, it would look good.

I thought about doing the same to the 03, but after the short shift kit, and bending it closer, (back, and left) I decided it didn't need any length off.

You may want to look at the SRT-10 shifter for your rig. I just got mine from www.tomeygun.com (TDR member) and I love it! I got tired of the long throw of reaching 5th. While I don't have the short shift kit, the SRT-10 shifter and adapter that Tomeygun made are perfect. I didn't realize the "slop" of the factory shifter with the isolator until I put in the SRT shifter. Shifting seems to be more precise with the new shifter. Anyways, just a suggestion. I will post pics tonight.

Damn Turbo Tim, I really like that 2950 mount. There is just nowhere to put mine in this 3G. I'm using a cheap little Cobra that I fit in the dash, & hauling my 2950 all over the country in the trailer basement.

Will a shortened shifter require more effort to shift??? I'm not sure if it holds true for top-loaders, but it is true for linkage type shifters in cars. Makes sense, if your leverage arm is shorter, it will take more effort to move it.

yep. . i made my own shifter and it was in for a few hours. . then removed. . i didn't engineer it well enough, and was not happy with how it felt. . i will later make a new one or get tommygun's srt-10 shifter

Originally I bent the stock lever to find out how I wanted it to fit but I didn't shorten it. Of course bending it technically shortens it a little. When I made the new one out of stainless I made it so the same dimensions as the stocker but bent it a little different

I bought the SRT-10 shifter from Tommeygun. I ended up breaking the threads off of the BD short shifter so I just welded the shifter to the nub of the short shifter. Lowered it about 2-3 inches. Nice and short throws, and no more breaking shifters! Lee.
