i have been putting this off as long as possible but I think its time for a transmission rebuild. I visited a local shop recomended by my diesel shop today. The guy told me that his trans would be just as good as any of the other ones out there. He has 30 years experience, so he tells me and has performed work on many other dodge autos. He said i would be ready to roll for $2600 torque converter, valve body and all. Would you trust a local to rebuid or just suck it up and buy a DTT or equivelent?

Thanks

Jeremiah

What kind of warrenty does he offer? Does he gaurenty it if you up your HP? Does he address the other internal problems of the 47re or his he just throughing in a valve body & torque converter?

Bottom line is you get what you pay for.

Love my DTT

i am not sure. Maybe some of you guys who know a little bit more about this could help me with a list of questions

I went thru the same thing when I decided to upgrade my transmission. I decided to suck it up and do it right the 1st time and be done with it. You cant go wrong with DTT or ATS or some of the others that are discussed in the TDR. If you go with the local guy it might be ok. but why take a chance unless you are getting ready to get rid of the truck. I am happy I did it right the 1st time. Save a nickel now pay big dollars later. Your choice. For me I trust what many other TDR members have posted. They ALL seem to be happy with the major rebuilders.

Just my 2 cents.

My 2 bits is ABSOLUTELY NOT! I've seen too many marginal rebuilds go bad after 20,000 miles or so. This guy might be a good rebuilder, but the Cummins engine makes SO MUCH torque, it tears apart most re-builds.

Here is another clue. Go by the guys shop and see how many Dodge/Cummins trucks are parked there for rebuilds! When I was at ATS in Sept. I counted over 15 Dodge/Cummins and 3-4 Powerstrokes in the parking lot and on the street.

If yours is the only Dodge/Cummins do yourself a favor and don't let him learn on your truck that he can't build something which holds the torque.

Go with either ATS, Suncoast, Goerends, Dtt etc.

I'll be down around Monett in another month, I'll come on up and give you a ride in my '95 with an ATS Stage IV if you want. You'll like it!;)

Unless the local guy is thoroughly experienced in building PERFORMANCE trannies, or YOU are willing to accept what is likely a compromise - go with the guys who know ALL the finer points it takes to build a strong and reliable transmission for these trucks!

The dollars you "save" on a conventional rebuild will likely come back to haunt you somewhere down lonely road...

It seems to me that 2600 is a LITTLE less than DTT (with full support). Probably the same applies with ATS and others as well. With something as important as this and the initial outlay I would definitely consider a proven source of experts that can build and backup a proven product.
