I am considering a 2001 Quad Cab shorty 4x4,but I keep thinking that a 12 valve is the way to go. Anyone owned both the 12 and 24 valve,What. s your opinion?

12vs 24

The "quatro-valve" motors arent better, just different. They were produced to meet CA emissions, not as a better mousetrap. Better would be something out of Europe... like, common-rail injection, 400hp, 35mpg, etc... as in more like what Cummins is promising for the new series of Rams. Speaking of which: I believe that the newest trucks being sold now will suffer in price once the new style hits the streets, where-as the 12V trucks have already depreciated and wont really be effected. JMO.

I agree with BCFAST... the newer trucks will have common rail injection. Im not real fond of the EGR systems that will be on the new trucks!!! That is terrible. Maybe Cummins has a good system though. Lets hope so.

Bosch still has the fuel delivery system on them at least. It will be alot like the Duramax Bosch common rail system. It all sounds(no pun intended) like a step toward a quieter, friendlier diesel.

Personally I love the way my truck sounds... . alot of the public does not.

Don~

I just bought a 12v and want to up the horse power a lot and am feeling a bit left out. There is all this talk of people putting 450+ hp on the ground with the 24v and all I am going to see without spending over 2 grand is mabey 350 hp according to Piers. Not happy about that, all the 24v people have to do is mess with the eletronics (a box and a chip), and put in some 275 nozzles and there is 480 hp. Presto.

Well here is another opinion... ... ...

I have had both just like alot of people have and for me there is no comparison. The 12V's are a great motor but the are not what the 24V is. the 24V breaths alot better, makes better power over a broader range, and requires less maintenance to keep it up,ie; valve adjustment is six times better than the 12V.

Both are good motors the 24V is just an improvement of the 12V... ... ... ..... Pete

I agree with Pete

I have owned both and stock there is no comparison. 24v is the way to go. Little less milage but alot more power. IMO

CAnderson,

I post this is hoping for some responses so I can learn here too. Yes the 24v makes more power, but dont let them fool you into thinking its just a box and DD's. They still all buy gauges, exhausts, housings, hx40's, air intake systems, etc. to monitor things and keep the EGT's in check. Yes you can read about BIGBOB posting 450+ with his injectors and box, but dont think thats the only mods he has made.

Power:

TST Plate - Box and Boost Module

Injectors - Injectors

EGT's / Sound / Etc.

PDR HX35 - HX40

16cm housing - 16cm housing

4" exhaust - 4" exhaust

air system - air system

clutches - clutches

gauges - gauges

What I see is the 24v make more power for the similar mods, but also costs more to BOMB. A good 97-98 12v is cheaper to buy, cheaper to BOMB, but will have about 100hp less.

Personally I would keep what you got, BOMB it and be happy. Selling your 12v, buying a 24v, and them BOMBing the 24v will prolly cost you more, than just calling Piers and telling you want to go wild on your 12v. -- Now if I didnt have a 12v already, and was looking, and could afford the newer trucks, yes I would buy a 24v.
